AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above board was held last night. Present— Messrs J. . Ash well (chairman), E. Carr, B. Brown, A, Russell, and A. Erew. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, stating that the Land Board, having approved of the proposals made by the board, the Receiver of Land Revenue would pay over to their credit the sum of £7O 17s 7d, “thirds” accrued from sections held on deferred payment and perpetual lease, up to July 31st, 1891. "this amount is to be expended on formation, improvements, and maintenance of roads, or other-work within the settlement, tending to facility of access or communication by the settlers whose payments contribute the amount in the manner set forth in the board’s letters of Dec. Ist, 1890, and Sept. 12th, 1891. No funds accrue to the board’s credit from sections sold for cash without special authority of the Government. —The clerk was instructed to write to the Minister of Lands re payment of “ thirds ” in respect of lands sold for cash. The Receiver of Land Revenue wrote advising payment to the board’s credit of the sum of £7O 17s, thirds of receipts from isections specified in list attached. A circular was received from the Property Tax Commissioner, asking that intending assessors under the Land and Income Tax Bill should be given opportunities for inspecting rolls, maps, etc. From Mr W. Wills, asking the board to give instructions to the ranger to impound all cattle trespassing upon roads, etc He pointed out that but little common •land was left, and cattle were constantly doing damage to fences and crop. Ine poundkeeper already had authority to -impound from roads, and any neglect on the latter’s part should be reported to the Road Board. BBXPOB. The question of a bridge to the specia: settlement was discussed at some length, and it was resolved that the overseei submit a specification and estimate of cosi at next meeting. overseer’s report. The overseer’s report was read anc dealt with as follows: — <( To the Chairman and Commissioners Arowhenua Town Board, Gentlemen, — Since last meeting tw< . men have been employed in all 6& daysii: putting in pipe culvert across Main Nortl . Belt, repairs to Swamp road, and at foot-

paths, etc., Studholme street. Some repairs are required to the North Belt md High street, upon which are several boles that require filling up. I recommend that this be done by the employment of a man with horse and dray for a few days. The crossing to the middle park gate should be taken up, as it dams back the water for a chain or more after heavy rain. This crossing was made without permission from the board, and consequently the Park Board should be requested to comply with the general regulation in this matter. The Land Board having agreed to this board’s proposals re the expenditure of “thirds,” some of the works proposed might be put in hand at once. The half chain road (unnamed) leading to the Special Settlement should be formed, as water accumulates after rainfall. A portion of Gamack street, upon which there is a great deal of heavy traffic, should be shingled at an early date, to allow of the same binding before grain carting commences. Tho police have during the month made an inspection with the view of ascertaining how many dogs were unregistered. As a result six dogs were registered. Two of the owners of these were summoned to appear at the R.M. Court, and were fined. Notices have been issued to ratepayers in arrear and defaulters will receive summonses for the next sitting of the Court. I have written to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, relative to the fencing and cropping of unoccupied land in tho boundary, and have asked the Land Board to send their ranger to report. I should suggest that the board take steps to have reserve 1069 . vested in them for gravel purposes. All that portion of the settlement east of John street is outside the postal boundary, and I have frequently received notices to residents there “unclaimed.” I would suggest that either steps be taken to have a weekly delivery to this part, or that a central branch post office be established, say,' at Mr Prattley’s store, so that letter* might be obtainable after the ordinary closing hour of the general post office.— I have, etc., « A. W. Gaze, “ Overseer.”

The overseer was instructed to make application for to have reserve 1069 vested in the Board. He was also instructed to write to the Park Board and request them to put in a proper crossing at the middle gates. He was authorised to employ a man with horse and dray for repairs, and to have a little additional work done to culvert ot Swamp raad. He was instructed to write to the County Council in reference to a nuisance arising from the slaugheryards. The question of fencing of Crown\ Lands was discussed, and the letter of the/ clerk was confirmed. The overseer was ordered to invite tenders for formation of half chain road to Swamp settlement. On the motion of Mr Carr it was resolved to invite tenders for shingling in Gamack Street. In the matter of postal business it was resolved that the clerk write to the post office authorities and ask that the gazetted boundary of the Arowhenua town district be the limit of the postal delivery or that a post box be established. Mr Brown d rew attention to the gully in the unformed portion of Alexander street and suggested that the road should be improved. One of the residents had drawn his attention to it. No resolution was made upon the subject. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £6 18s 7d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
