GERALDINE COUNTY ANGLERS SOCIETY.
The adjourned annual meeting of the above society was held at the Crown Hotel, Temuka, on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs E. Cutton, J. Findlay, A. Beck,,P. Coira, D. Taylor, A. Hope, N. C. Nicholas, W. Cooper, A. W. Gaze, and the hon.-sec., Mr J. W. Velvin. r -Mr Hope apologised for-the absence of Mr A. M. Clark, the President, who was unable to be present. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report was to the effect that there were 34 members, names bn the books, many of whom Were in arrear with their subscriptions, and these were urged to pay up as soon as possible, as it was necessary that funds should be in hand to provide for competitive angling matches. In the competition on the 16th of last December, for fly fishing Mr R. H, Rhodes’s challenge cup was awarded to Mr W. Mendelson, who took 55 fish weighing 27ffi); Mr Findlay second with 19 fish weighing 12p>'; and Mr N. C. Nicholas third with ten fish weighing 16lb. In the minnow fishing class Mr A. B. G. Rhodes’s cup was won by Mr A..., Hope, 5 fish weighing 23flb; and the best average by Mr Meredith Kaye; and for, the heaviest fish Mr D. Taylor, won the prize. Twenty-one persons were present at the annual fish dinner, which was a greatsuccess, and the committee wished to express their pleasure at the interestshown by the Geraldine members. . The receipts, including a balance of £lllss lOdl amounted to £2l 12s lOd; and the expenditure to £lB 5s 8d; leaving £3 7s 2d to credit, and liabilities amounting to £5 12s 6d. The unpaid subscriptions amounted to £5 9s 6d; leaving a net balsnce of £3 3s Bd. The committee deSired to thank Mr A. Hope for donations to the prize fund; also, Messrs. A. E. G. and R. H. Rhodes for the» interest manifested by them in tbo society, as well as landowners who allowed members to fish in streams under their control. The chairman, in moviug its adoption, said that the society appeared to be in a. slightly better position than last year, but there was still great rooiu for improvement. Mr Coira seconded the motion, which was carried.; '■ >: NEW MEMBERS. Messrs A. W. Gaze, W. Cooper, and T. Langdon were elected members of the society. OFFICERS. On the motion of Mr Hope, seconded by Mr Coira, Mr A. M. Clark was re-elected president of the society ; Mr VV. Deßenzy and - Mr J. T. M. Hayhurst. were Unanimously elected vice-presidents;; and Mr J. W. Velvin was re-elected! secretary and treasurer. Eleven nominations .were' received, for the committee;, and the following seven were elected: — Messrs J. Findlay, A. Beck, A. Hope, PCoira, E. Cutten, A. E. Hawkins, and N. C. Nicholas.
GENERAL. , Mr-‘Nicholas moved—.‘'That the secro- ' tary Write tothe Geraldine County Acclimatisation Society "With the view of having 3000 American char (fontiualis) liberated; in the Ohapi and Paugitata Island creeks.” Messrs Snell, Graiug, and . Page had promised to attend to the liberation of fish in the latter, stream,- and ha (the speaker) would be happy to take charge.of fish at Temuka, and 1 liberate them in the Ohapi. He pointed out that the streams mentioned were the best in the district for lly fishing, and char afforded capital tfporfc for iuexperien cedfishermen.’The motion was approved and the secretary directed to write to the Acclimatisation Society upon the subject, Mr Findlay moved —“ That the secretary write to all riparian owners who had granted permission to members to fish the streams over which they had control, and solicit from them a continuance of the privileges enjoyed in the past,” Mr . Findlay also drew attention to the lax - way in which records were kept. If members kept their records they were never published under authority of the society, and ho suggested that cards be printed and given to each member, and that upon these their monthly takes should j be recorded, and summarised at the end iof the year. The suggestion was commended, „ and it was agreed that the committee, should procure a hundred or more. Mr Gaze said that it appeared that the society lost by the members not meeting , morp frequently. If informal pMtiingis wme held every fqur or six" wteki, the members would have', the opportunity of exchanging ideas, discussing matters of common interest to aiiglera,. and noting their “takes”, and so forth. He waa assured that angling wks yet in its. infancy as far m Temuka was concerned, and it waa dfistihejl to foim a im?
portant factor in the progress of the district. As the fame of the society spread so would visitors be encouraged to visit the .town. He movtd—“ That the members' of the society be invited to meet in an informal manner on the evening of >tShe first Tuesday in each month at such place as'the secretary shall select.” Mr Findlay endorsed Mr Gaze’s remarks and seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr Hope said that he should be pleased again* to give a donation of a guinea for a special prize, and was heartily thanked. . A VOTES OF THANKS. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to the retiring officers, riparian owners, and to the chair, and the meeting terminated. A committee meeting was subsequently held, and routine business transacted.
