SC. BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The monthly meeting of the Board of Education Was held on Thursday. Present —Messrs S. W. Goldsmith (chairman), W. B. Howell, W. Storey, M. Gray, J. Talbot, and Rev. T. Jasper Smyth. Apologies were received from Messrs, Jackson and Rhodes. inspector's reports. The inspector presented reports on the examinations of the undermentioned schools aB follows (A, percentage of ~p asses;.B, of failures ; C, of class subjects; D. Opihi, Otaio j fairly satisfactory—Albury. Burkels Pass, Fairview, Pleasant Point, St. Andrews; good Fairlie Creek, Pareora; poor, not satisfactory—Hazelburn, Sutherland, -Silverstream; very unsatisfactory—Waterfalls. Mr Talbot remarked that the reports as a whole were.aatisfactory. The chair- , man thought they were a fair lot of reportsj and pointed out that in all cases "order.and attention" were favourably reported on. committees' correspondence. Arundel pressed for the erection of a teacher's residence and mentioned that more settlement: blocks would shortly be occupied, which would increase the attendance at the school.—Referred to the building committee. Hilton recommended' Miss Constance Peach, as, assistant mistress.—Approved. Waimate recommended Mr McLeod as i assistant master.—r Approved. ! The same- committee named -three or four gentlemed who would be suitable as members of the Waimate High School Board.—lt was.resolved to appoint Mr J. : F. Douglas, subject to his consent. Washdyke wrote respecting water j supply, urging that the rain water tank proposed by the board would not be satisfactory either in quantity or, on! account of the bird nusiance, in quality, and the race water was unfit for use in summer. The committee would prefer a new well—After a long discussion it war agreed that Mr Talbot should inspect the "place and report, and the office act upon any recommendation he may make. Pleasant Point was granted £4 to deepen, well, shift gallery, and paint picket fence. Waimataitai wrote drawing attention j to the fact that the school is now tested to the extent of its capacity, and requesting the board to complete the school according to the original plan of the building— Referred to the building committee to; :deal with when the next grant isreceived. The same committee also requested the board to appoint two additional pupil teachers. As a compromise between the 'requirements of the school and those of ithe regulations,: it was agreed; on the, motion of Mr Howell to appoint one pupil teacher at once. , This completed the business. I
