REBELLION IN GUATEMALA.
New Yori, Sept. 30.
A revolt in Guatemala occurred on September 16th, on - the. occasion of a national holiday. : The oratora who were addressing the people-were chased and stoned. Cries wexe; .rawed of ■'? Down with Barillas and Government tyranny." Violent speeches were made by the leaders. of the mob, until a battalion of infantry" arrived and charged with fixed bayonets.' A battle enßued, the mob using revolvers. The.artillery joined the infantry, and street fighting went on for three days, each party alternately having control of, the city. A reign of terror ensued, but after 500 people hadbeen killed, troops came in and restored the supremacy of the Government. Martial law was at once proclaimed. Colonel Jabon shot General Sanchez, and. the brotherof the latter shot Jabon. President Barrillas ordered the execution of the brother. Quezattenago, at the latest advices, had revolted, and-a thousand men were supporting the leaders. It is reported that the Government of San Salvador are moving troops to the frontier, and proposed to invade Gutemala in the event of the revolt spreading.
