THE BURGOS DISASTER.
Madiud, Sept. 27. It turns out to be an unsalaried apprentice of eighteen who caused the Burgos disaster, by the .inefficient handling of the brakes The driver of the ordinary train heroically tried to slow down but without avail. He lived to say that he hoped he was the onlyvictim. The fireman has become insane. Sept. 28. The funeral of the victims of the railway collision at Burgos took place yesterday, and was attended by an immense concourse of people. Mr Cotton, an English barrister, who was among those injured, is in a critical condition. Intense hostility is shown by the people against the railway company concerned in the accident. Queen Christina makes daily enquirries as to the condition of the sufferers. «. THE PANIC IN SYDNEY. Sydney, Sept. 28. There was great anxiety to-day in financial circles on it being learnt that two more Building and Investment Socities had called meetings of their depositors to discuss the situation. The Australian Mutual Provident Building Society has paid-up capital of £28,000 with depositors, and other liabilities amounting to £77,000. The assets include borrowers' balances of £26,000 and landed estates £79,0d0. The Metropolitan Mutual Permanent Society's liabilities include paid up capital £123,000, amount held on deposit £126,000, total liabilities £128,000. The assets are borrowers' balances £162,000, landed estates £235,000, uncalled capital £26,000. Both Companies assert they are financially sound. Sept. 29. The Excelsior Building Society has suspended payment. The capital is £105,000. The principal liabilities arethepaid-upcapital.£sß,ooo; reserve, fund,£3o,ooo; contigent fund,£10;000; deposits, £28,000. The value of its assets is set down at £428,000; lands and buildings, £174,000.
