GERALDINE RACING CLUB'S SPRING MEETING.

Stewards Messrs A. M. Clark, T. Teschemaker, R. H. Pearpoint, M. Connolly, W. Deßenzy, B. B. Macdonald, A. White, J. Mundell, R. Taylor, T. Markham, J. Farrell; A. E. Cox, and F. W. Woraer. Judge—Mr A. M.« Clark. Clerk of the Course —Mr A. L. Barker. Clerk of the Scales—Mr R. H. Pearpoint. Statter —Mr J. Meikle. Treasurer—Mr J. Mundell. Secretary—Mr F. Wilson Smith. Handicapper—Mr G. Dowse. FIRST DAY. The Geraldine Racing Club may congratulate themselves on the result of yesterday's racing, as it was about the best day they have had for many years. The club has been very unfortunate as regards weather, and when the thunderstorm of the previous evening came on It was generally expected that we should experience real Geraldine racing weather. However, the club succeeded in propitiating the clerk of the weather by some means, and the day was as fine as could possibly have been desired. The course, was in splendid , order, and the attendance unusually large—the largest seen on the ground for years—and the racing was very good, some of the finishes being extremely close, and the handicaps on the whole being;very satisfactory. The meet- j ing passed off very quietly and without an accident, and though Mr Homes had refreshment booths on the' ground, in which he appeared to do excellent business, there was a complete absence of drunkenness. The stewards may be complimented on the excellence of their arrangements, ■ and to the courteous secretary our thanks are due for unvarying civility and obligingness. All the officers worked well together, and the result was that there was not a hitch from beginning to end. It would appear, too, that there is some money in the district yet, as the totalisator was well patronised, £1866 having passed through . it. The racing appeared to hare been carried on in a very straight manner, as though the favorite did not always win, horses which were in very high favor always took off the honors, and not a single murmur was raised during the day with regard to any unfair dealing. The following are the results : Squatters' District Handicap, of 35 bo vs. ; 5 sovs. from the stake to go to the second horse. 1 mile. ■* Messrs M. and C. Hobbs's b g Quibble, aged, Bst 121 b (Buddicombe) ... 1 Mr S. Brown's b g Kilmarnock, syrs, Bst3lb ... (McConnockie) 2 Mr P. Considerable difficulty was experienced in getting the field away, but eventually a rather uneven start was effected, Quibble and The Chief showing well in front, Kilmarnock and Beach being . left behind. Young Cheviot, Beach, and Kilmarnock lost considerably at the start, but the last-named horse pulled up gamely and forged ahead for about three-quarters of the distance, when he took second place, and a warm race ensued •to the finish. Kilmarnock came into second place half a length behind the winner, with Young Cheviot about six lengths behind, and the Chief close on his haunches, Only for the bad start Kilmarnock would undoubtedly have won. He lost four or five lengths in the beginning, that enabled Quibble to win easily. Selling Race, of 40 sovs. Weight for age. The winner to be sold for £3O. If entered to be sold for £2O, allowed 71b. ; £ls, 141 b. ; £lO, 211 b. ; £5, 281 b. ; nil, 351 b. Minimum weight, 6st. 71b. Dividend, £3 9s. Cactus got the best of, a fair start, and led to the turn into the Btraight, when he was collared by Miss Ann, which came in a winner by a head. The third horse was about ten lengths behind, and the others scattered over a similar distance on the course. Gbraldine Cop Handicap, of 50 sovs. ; 5 sovs. from the stake to go to the second horse., 1J miles. { Mr W. Russell's b h Bay King, syrs, Bst 71b... ... ... (Derritt) 1 Mr T. Totalisator, £314; £123 on the winner; dividend, £2 ss. A good start brought the field out well together, but passing the Grand'Stand Coinage led, with Liberator Becond, and Bay King third. The horses remained well together till at the back of the course, when they were running in pairs, Coinage and Liberator, being in the lead. I Turning into the staight Bay King . challenged the leader, and came in a winner by half a length, the other; two horses being close up. Time, Bmln 52sec. Totalisator, £261; £79 on the winner; dividend, £2 19s. It took some time before the last horse appeared on the field, when they were discovered scattered over a long distance. Winchester was going well but broke so frequently that she fell back, and lost her place. Our Pony trotted splendidly fposa % iftaitf, and pawwig the grand

I stand the first time had come into second 'place, with Gaiety leading, Tom 111. third, Old Dadd and Tom together in the ! fourth place, Madeline fifth, Winchester' Bixth, and Sisßy last. Henceforward Madalene began to move, and went through the field quickly, looking all over a winner. When passing the grand stand the second time Our Pony led, with Madalene second, Tommy 111. third, Tom fourth, and the others nowhere. Madeline continued gaining on the leader till being hard pressed at the back of the course she bioke, and lost a great deal of ground, and thus loat the race by about a chain, Tom being a good third. This was a race in which much interest was taken, but it lay all along between Our Pony and Madeline, both of which showed splendid action, and travelled in very quick time, and only for breaking it is quite probable that Madeline would have won.

Flying Handicap, of 40 sovs. 5 sovs. froja the stake to go to the second horse. 6 farlongs. Messrs M. and C. Hobb's b m Lady

The horses started as they came in, and no change was made in the race to the finish. Invader carried 101 b overweight. Gbraldinh District Stakes, of 25 sovs. 5 sovs. from the stake to go to the second horse. For three-year-olds. Colts, Bst. 101 b. ; geldings, Bst. 71b. ; fillies, Bst. 51b. 6 farlongs. Mr E. T. Time, lmin 22sec. Totalisator, £237; £9l on the winner; dividend, £2 6s. Owing to the field being so large, and some of the horses being very restive, a difficulty was experienced in sending them away. The flag fell, however, to a fair start, of which Morpheus obtained the advantage by about a length, Victim being in fourth place, and Marten about third. Very little change took place until turning into the straight, when Victim came into second place and raced well, but never came up to the winner. Morpheus led from start to finish and won easily, with Marten a good third, and the others tailing up for a distance of 100 yards. Belfield District Handicap, of 25 sovs. 6 furlongs. Welter weights. The winners of the Squatters', Cup, and Flying Handicaps carried 101 b. penalty. Mr S. Brown's b g Kilmarnock, syrs, 9st 71b 1 Mr H. Lambert's br g Cactus, 4yrs, Bst9lb 2 Mr W. Russell's ch g Tomatu, syrs, Bstslb 3 Thackeray, 9st 121 b; Mailboy, 9st 21b 5 Emperor, 9st; The Ace, Bsft 31b; Fireking, Bst; also started. Time, lmin 21sec. Totalisator, £145; £3B on the winner; dividend, £4 3s. A lot of time was wasted, in this race by Thackeray refusing to be led out of the saddling yard, and when at last he got out he refused ta start, and this wasted considerably more time. When a start was effected Tomatu took the lead, and led till coming into the straight, when Kilmarnock forged ahead, followed by Cactus. This position was maintained to the flag, Kilmarnock winning by a neck. This finished the first day's racing, shortly, after 5 p.m.
