FOOTBALL.
TEMUKA FIRS1 1 V. TIMARU FIRST. The final round of senior matches arranged by the S.C. Rugby Union was played at Temuka between the above teams, and resulted in a win for the visitors by 5 points (a goal from a try, and two tries) to nil. The Temuka captain winning the toss elected to play with the sun at their backs. The visitors at once assumed thejaggressive, and be fore five minutes had elapsed Allison scored in the proximity of the corner flag. Rutherford was unsuccessful with the place. From the kick out play shifted to Timaru's quarters owing to Allison mulling. Perry by a good run had it back to Temuka's 25, and from a pass by Matheson he scored close to the posts. Rutherford was again unable to enhance the score. Play during the remainder of the spell was of an uninteresting character, being entirely a forward game. No other score took place during this spell, and 1 when half time was called the visitors were two points to the good. Temuka played up much better during the second spell, and Goldstone obtained an tinmistakeable try, but the referee disallowed it. From a lime-out close to the , Timaru line he secured the ball and " carried it over and touched it down, with several Timaru men hanging on to him. One of them secured the ball after it had been touched down and claimed a force down, which the referee allowed, without even asking one of the umpires. Shortly afterwards Perry scored another try, and Rutherford was this time successful with the place. No other score took place, thus leaving the visitors victors by 5 points nil. Of the Temuka backs Russell played a splendid game at full-back, and the score would have been much heavier ouly for his effective collaring. Armitagqj"
and McCallum also played well. Carr, Gillespie, GafFaney, Anderson, and •; Duncan played well forward. Perry was the best of the Timaru backs, while Collins and Thomas also played well. j Austin, Matheson, Orr, and Thompson were the best of a good lot of forwards. | Messrs Boys and Anderson acted as | umpires, while Mr Hinge filled the 1 capacity of referee.
