RAUKAPUKA LICENSING COMMITTEE.

The above committee met yesterday at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Geraldine. Present —Messrs W. M. Moore (chairman), G. J. Dennstoun, and R. Thew. A letter of apology for non-attendance was read from Mr John Kelland, who, being in Timaru, could not attend. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from the Undersecretary of Justice, acknowledging receipt of resolutions passed at the last meeting of the committee, RANGITATA. Messrs Dennistoun and Thew brought up the subject of an accident which happened to a man on Sunday, 16th August, at Rangitata Bridge. Reports were current that the man was in the horrors of drink at the time. Constable Willoughby reported that I he had made enquiries into the matter, and found that the man had been living at the Rangitata Hotel, and was working at .tree-planting for Mr Wheelband, and was not in'the horrors as reported. He

simply went for a walk on the bridge after dinner, and tried to drop from the bridge on to the riverbed, a feat he had accomplished on other occasions, but this time he fell and broke his collar-bone. The man had been drinking in Geraldine for a few days, some time previous to this. HILTON. Constable Willoughby reported that a man at Hilton was drinking to excess, and was neglecting his children. It was a question whether it would be necessary to take action under the Neglected Children’s Act to have the, children brought up properly, and it was finally decided that the licensee of the Hilton Hotel be written to warning him not to supply the man with liquor. The meeting then adjourned;
