The “Sea Serpent.”— Captain McLean, of the brigantine Gleaner, which arrived at Auckland on Tuesday, from Napier, reports that on the morning of the 19th, when a hundred miles off Portland Island, he sighted what is believed to be the object reported recently as a sea serpent by the Manapouxi and Rotomahana. When about twenty yards from the vessel; it was seen to be a large limb of a tree, curved or twisted in shape, about 40 feet long,, and 3 or 4 feet in circumference in the largest part. One end was shaped like a fish’s head, the other like the flukes of a whale. The bark was stripped off in places, giving it a variegated appearance. It was in sight for two hours, rising and falling on the waves. It had probably drifted along the coast from the spot where the steamers sighted it.
