THE CANADIAN SCANDAL.
Ottawa, August 22. The charge of selling Government positions against Mr Cochrane, member for Northumberlaand, has been referred to a special committee. Senecal, the Government printer, has resigned, but the Government refused to accept his resignrtion, and he will probably be dismissed. It is reported that the GovernorGeneral has forced Sir H. Langevin to resign his position in the Ministry.
SHOCKING CATASTROPHE IN NEW YORK. New York, August 23. The building which was reported to be blown up on Saturday was a hive of business, and it is feared that one hundred people have perished. One man was roasted to death. Three children who were playing on the pavement were buried, but their voices were heard, and the firemen worked like madmen. A boy called out, “Please save my little sister; she’s all bloody.” In the end the efforts of the rescuers were successful and all three were saved. It is now said that the cause of the catastrophe is doubtful.
NEWS FROM THE ISLANDS. Sydney, August 25. The schooner Vailele, Captain Evers, and a crew of six, are believed to have been lost at the Solomon Islands. A force' under command of Captain Bavis, of H. M. S. Royalist, landed at St. Christoval, Solomon Group, in search of the murderers of Captain Craig, of the schooner Sandfly, who was shot dead by natives at Makiara in January last. A detachment succeeded in surprising a village where the murderers were hiding, but the latter escaped, though the principal chief was captured and held as a hostage. The Royalist also paid a visit to Ogi Island and punished the murderers of Howard, manager of Stevens’ party, of Dunedin, and others in March last. Intelligence received via Thursday Island states that during a typhoon near Hong Kong, the British gun-boat Tweed went ashore, and one of the seamen was drowned, The vessel was subsequently towed off, but immediately sank.
Fatal Bush Accident.—A man named Sam Walker was killed at Motu bush, Gisborne, on Monday. A tree which his mate was falling fell on top of Walker, crushing his chest, and brc iking - his back and both arms.
