CHINA AND THE POWERS.
London, August 16,
The Shanghai correspondent of the London Standard telegraphs that the relations between the Foreign Legation and the Chinese Government over the recent riots continue strained. The representatives of the Great Powers in China will send a joint Note on Wednesday morning, demandiug the protection of all foreigners and foreign mission stations in the Chinese empire. Yokohama, Aug. 15. News of a disturbing character has been received as to the condition of affairs in Corea. It is asserted that Russian influence has succeeded in overturning both the local factions which were contending for supremecy, and it is commonly rumored that Great Britain, Japan, and China, are combining to defeat the Russian plan. The Chinese fleet is mustering, and war is predicted between Russia and China. Pekin, Aug. 17. The Pekin officials remain obdurate and demand that the Great Powers should indemnify for loss in the recent riots. The Powers threaten a naval action. August 18. The payment of an indemnity for the outrage committed on the English mission stations has been arranged by the Chinese local authorities, and England now demands the punishment of the rioters.
