ACCIDENTS, FATALITIES, ETC.

Auckland, August 17. Patrick Dougherty, a gum digger, had a narrow escape from death at Kanohi by the Kaipara train this morning. As the train came round a bend he was seen lying with his head on the rails. The driver whistled, shut off steam, and put down the brakes, but to no avail. The cowcatcher struck him on his head, knocking him off the line. He is expected to recover. Lily Carter, a girl of seventeen, has mysteriously disappeared at Huntley. She was staying with Mrs Friar, a relative, and on Saturday evening left the house without a hat, and having only slippers on her feet. Search parties went out since. The river has been dragged, but no trace of the missing girl were discovered. By the capsize of a boat containing a fishing party, on the Opotiki Bar, Albert and Charles Hopkins, sons of Captain Chas. Hopkins, of the steamer Chelmsford, and Frank Hudson were drowned. Fbilding, August 17. Mr John Hoban, a farmer, of Cambelltown, was killed near Arawhuri, on Saturday night by his trap upsetting. Wellington, August 17. All the outbuildings on the homestead of F. C. Goodrich, near Featherston, were burnt down on Saturday. There was no insurance. The damage is estimated at £2OO. August 18. The mutilated body of a man named McCarthy, was found near Shannon this morning. It is believed he was riding along the line when he was overtaken by a special which passed through Shannon about two o’clock this morning, having on board a consignment of frozen mutton.

Adelaide, Aug, 17. A large cattle train was completely wrecked near Beltana through the breaking of an axle. All the officials ou board escaped witheut injury, but over one hundred cattle were killed. Bomb, August 17.

Two aeronauts, named Louis Pieron and Meacrata, have been blown to sea in the Adriatic and drowned.
