RANGITATA ISLAND.
The Rangitata Island Band of Hope celebrated its fifth anniversary by an entsrtainment and coffee supper on Thursday,/13th instant. The chair was taken by Mr H. Wright, who made a few appropriate remarks, and then called on the secretary, Miss Grainger, to read the annual report, which was as follows : “ The Band of Hope has arrived at its fifth anniversary, and we, the members, are pleased to notice that the popularity pf our meetings seems to be on the increase, at at the last meeting the holding powers of the schoolroom were taxed to the utmost. During the past year the members of conmittee were Messrs H. Wright, Grainger. Buck, and Watts, while Miss Sarah Grainger filled the position of hon. secretary.. All the books required have been bought and paid for ' during the year, and we are pleased to state that we have a cash balance in hand of £1 10s 6d. During the past year twelve persons have donned the blue, and this is very encouraging, considering the small number we have to come and go on. We hope that before long our membership will include every man, woman, and child on the island. We look forward with confidence to the coming year, for We know teat, even in this out-of-the-way ylace we can at least do our best to further the glorious cause of temperance.” During the evening short addresses were given by the Rev. Mr Dellow and Mr Buxton; songs by the children, Mr Dellow, Willie ' Grainger, and Miss Grainger; recitations by Herbert Grainger, F. Watts, H. Wright, W. Summerfield, R. Buck, and Miss Story; dialogues by Messrs Watts, Morrison, Buck, and Snell. The children’s songs were evidently much appreciated by the audience; indeed, the little ones acquitted themselves creditably, and reflected great credit on their teacher, Mr Hawkes. The other items were very well received, and where all tried to do their best it would be
invidious to criticise. Suffice it to say that Mr Bellow was a host in himself.. After the completion of the programme the room was rearranged for the' coffee supper. Abundant supplies of good things were provided, and were handad round,
in, quite, professional style, by a willing and good-tempered band of attendants. Everything connected with the affair was carried out in an enthusiastic manner, and with an evident desire to please and entertain thpse present. The room was crowded, and the collection token at the conclusion of the supper amounted to £3 10s 9d, a very fair amonnt for such an out-of-the-way place. Before separating, Mr Grainger, chairman of the
School Committee, referred to Mr Hawkes’ departure from the island, .and expressed the regret of the committee and the parents that his stay among them had been so short. After returning thanks
for the kindly expression of goodwill shown towards himself, Mr Hawkes moved a hearty vote of thanks to those who had arranged the evening’s amusement, and also to those who had provided'the coffee supper. This was carried with acclamation, and terminated a very successful evening. _ \
