Auckland, August 12. Hugh Shortland, a solicitor, was committed for trial for alleged libel on an unmarried woman. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £SO, and accused in a like amount. Edward Allen, a gum digger, aged 63, was found dead in a swamp at the Hocherua gumfield, Mongonui. Oamaru, August 12. Hugh Thompson, a farmer residing at Georgetown, committed suicide on Tuesday, after making an assault on his wife with a knife and attempting to set fire to his house. An inquest was held on the body to-day when a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned. Deceased had suffered in health recently, and was otherwise bothered in mind.
