GERALDINE ROAD BOARD

The monthly meeting of the above was held on Monday last, and was attended by Messrs ilatman (chairman), Kellman, Deßenzy, Brophy, and Metcalf. tenders. Tenders were received as follows : Contract l\o. 339—Formation and Shingling, Brown's Road, Orari Village Settlement: Jonas Fiefield, £22; Timothy Sugrue, £2O; Morris Lawlor, £l9 (accepted.) Contract No. 340—Shingling Shaw's and Swamp Road, Geraldine Flat: Timothy Sugrue, £6B; Daniel Gregan, £6l 10s (accepted.) wreathall's road. The chairman intimated that he had received notice from the Chief Surveyor, stating that he would be down that day (Tuesday), to inspect Mr Wreathall's road. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: From Mr D. Mcdonald, offering £1 per annum for the gravel reserve on Mr Nalder's property for grazing purposes, on condition that a small gate be erected. —Accepted. From Mr Allan Macdonald, offering . £1 10s per annum for grazing rights on two reserves, one near his house and the other adjoining Stewart's.— Mr Shiers to report. From the Levels District Road Board enclosing, resolution passed at that board's last meeting " That this board uuanimously agrees to support the proposals made at June meetings of the Geraldine and Mount Peel Road Boards to alter the present constitution of County Councils."—The chairman said the matter was now in the hands of the Colonial Secretary and Mr Rhodes, M.H.R. It was agreed that if no move be taken this session, to allow the matter to stand over till next session. From Mr A. Johnson, Mount Peel, asking to have his name taken off the roll, as he had sold his property to Mr Gnthrie.—Mr Guthrie's consent to be obtained. From Mr Jesse Davis, Gapes' Valley, asking that, having sold part section No. 23525 (55 acres), to Mr Alex. McClintock, the name of the latter be substituted for his on the roll.—Granted. From Mr F. R. Flatman, junr., Woodbury, stating that it was his to apply, to the County (Council for a slaughter house license on Section 3610, lot 1, and asking if the board agreed to same, —No objection offered. From the Property Tax Department showing that they had sent to the Treasury on 21st July a voucher for the payment of £3l ss, balance of subsidy due to the board. From Mr J. W. Jones, Kakahu Bush, asking to get the road that comes up from Scobie's place connected, as he had no other public road to come and go on to his sections. -The clerk had already replied. From Mr John Greenall, Pleasant Valley, asking if the board would find him fencing material for reserve 1066 Valley river bed, and he would provide labour.—Mr Shiers to arrange.

From the Commissioner of Crown Lands re the deviation of road line R.S. 36107. He had many pressing duties to attend to and could not yet say definitely when he would be able to visit Geraldine, but would; however, do so at as early a date as possible. J From Mr A.E. G. Rhodes, M.H.R., enclosing "copy of "The Small Birds Nuisance Act," andalso copy of "The Local Bodies Accounts and Audit Bill, and asking for any suggestions from the board.—Suggestions already made. From the Bank of New South Wales, Geraldine, statingthat the board'sfixed' deposit for £3,500 had been renewed in two sums of £3,000 and £SOO. From the Bank of New Zealand, Geraldine, enclosing receipts for fixed deposits of £4,000. From Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, M.H.R., stating that he had interviewed the Lands and Survey Department re having two cottages in Geraldine township vested in the Road Board, and found that the matter had been referred to Christchurch, and had been delayed through the papers having been laid aside. He was afraid that the Government would refuse to vest the section 175 unless some necessity for the reserve could be shown.

ovekseer's RETORT.' The overseer's report was read as follows: — . I have the honor to report for the information of the board asunder:—The in hand are making fair progress. The following roads have been attended to during the past month, viz.: Orari Station road, Dobie's road, shingling footpaths at Woodbury township, and repairs to various other places.—Brown's road, Orari V.S.: As directed I have inspected this road and called tenders for the work, due this day. Donkin's road, Waihi Bush : I have been over this road, and find it to be deeply rutted at the upper end, near the bush, where the subsoil is deep and soft. It will require about 400 yards of shingle to place the road in good repair.—Poisoned wheat: There is a good

demand for this article, and I have ordered a fresh supply.—l have, &c. Wm. Sheers, Overseer. The report was adopted, and it was agreed to call tenders for 400 yards of shingging on Donkin's Road. Foster's bush road. Messrs J. Kelland and K. Brophy reported as follows on Foster's bush road, Gapes' a Valley—" In company with Mr Shiers we examined the road on the 20th ult. After carefully going over the old and new roads we consider it our duty in the interests of the ratepayers to recommend the old road should be retained as originally surveyed. Although the grade of the new road is somewhat easier than the old one, yet the advantage to be gained would not, we ihink, justify the additional expenditure of, say, £lO required to form the new road; and moreover the roads in question are very little used by the general public. There are seven persons interested in these roads to a greater or less extent, the majority of whom are satisfied with, and desire to keep, the original road." The Commissioner of Lands waited on the board re the above, and the matter was left over till he has time to inspect the roads in question. gorsb obstuction on road. The overseer was instructed to keep a sharp look out for persons who are not clearing gorse from the roads near their properties, and report them at once to the board. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £74 8s 6d were , passed for payment. orari bridge road. Mr Metcalf drew the attention of the board to the bad state of the road kept open at the Orari Bridge, and it was agreed that the clerk write to the County Council asking authority to put down some shingle. The board then rose. PUBLIC MEETING OF EATEPAYEBS AT GERALDINE. | A public meeting of ratepayers was at the Road Board Office, Geraldine, at noon yesterday, to consider the ad- j visability of biverting and closing certain road lines, for which others have been substituted. MOTIONS. It was proposed by Mr Metcalf, and seconded by Mr Kelland—" That the old line of road bounded by sections 3999. 8773. and 7781 be closed, and given in exchange to Mr F. Every for a new iine of road, as shown on plan, to give access to the Waitohi Hills."—-Carried. It was proposed by Mr Brophy, and seconded by Mr Metcalf—" That the road bounded ,by sections 24316 and 25154 at the head of the Beautiful Valley be exchanged with Messrs Studholme and Wigley for a new line.—Carried. The meeting fhen terminated.
