Samoan News. —The s.s. Lubeck has arrived at Sydney from Samoa. The latest information shows that the trouble with Mataaffa is causing the Consular Board considerable anxiety. A large number of natives of Leapaa, Famaloa, Falcapas, Maunos, and other towns have arrived in the vicinity of Maile, where Mataaffa has taken up his quarters. News was received lately at Apia that the Mauno people were trying to induce Tuasaamau, at Afiga, to join them in opposition to the. King and Government, and it would be a serious matter if Tuasaamua seceded from his allegiance to the King, as he could influence nearly all |the Tuamasaga representatives. The Powers have issued a proclamation declaring that anyone inciting rebellion against Malietoa will be brought to subjection. Mataaffa replied, asking for two or three months’ time in which to consider the proclamation, and intimating that if the natives were forced to obey it mischief might ensue. Mataaffa declared that neither he nor his people meant war, or anything bad to Samoa, but only claimed the right to act upon the first condition of the treaty. Mataaffa and Malie’s people have duly paid taxes to the treasurer. The question of currency in the group has been discussed by the Consular Board. The Chief Justice approves of the Board’s resolution that American, English, and German gold, and English silver be accepted at par,; and Chilian silver at 75 cents to the dollar, and that no Chilian money be accepted for duties, taxes, or licenses, after November 15th.
