FOOTBALL.

NORTH v SOUTH CANTERBURY.

; ’ ! (Press) ' •- The annual contest between ; the representatives of the North and South Canterbury Rugby Unions' took jplace on Saturday aftefnopii at Lancaster Park arid was witnessed by a large •gathering of people. The weather was fine, but the ground was somewhat heavy, this having been caused no doubt by the recent frosts. The Rev. J. Hoatson was referee, and Messrs LeCren and Harris touch judges. North Canterbury,as was ex - pected, won the match, which was played i throughout /in -fine spirit. Prom; a spectator’s point of View, however, it might have been more interesting. It was generally 6 forward one. Only Occasionally did the backs have the work'to ,do that should have been entrusted to them, oftener. It was at these times that the visitors showed the interest ; they felt by their applause of the good play on the part of the Competitors, Though the Northerners Avon by the comparatively large score of 17 points to 2 points, that hardly represents, the difference, for the game was of a more even nature, and the total was made up of three different items, which, while the result of pieces of very creditable play, were in themselvra unquestionable pieces of gqqd luck. The deduction of the three potted goals would leave the score in a position fairly representing the merits! of the respective teams. Of the play, as a whole, it must be said that North Canterbury showed up better after the loss of L. Elbert, who sprained his left ankle, than they did when possessing the services of the full complement of * irien. There appeared to be an indifference about them disappeared .as soon as a chance, or rather misfortune, gave the visitors one man to the good. The ;Squthern representatives were ofttimes strong in , their attack and well able to hold their own in the forward department, but they were decidedly line lljeir backs, whose kicking powers were riot, of the best.
