FOOTBALL.

The second trial match of the South Canterbury Rugby Union wasplayedin the Victoria Park on Saturday. Owing to the late arrival of the Timaru contingent the gnme did not start till 4. Id. Matheson captained the Blues and Anderson skippered the Colours. Both sides played with six forwards, and the Colours during the first ten minutes, by a grand rush, drew first blood by Goldstone scoring a try. The Blues then, by good play among the backs, took the offensive, and Gillespie scored, Macintosh placing a neat goal. The Blues got over once again before half-time was called. In the second spell the Blues got over shortly after kick oft', and Mendelson made two capital shots at goal. The Colours now made a grand rush, during which Opie Bros., Anderson, and Goldstone showed up well, and scored close to the post, a goal resulting. From the kick off some grand play by the Blues enabled Mendelson to take a successful pot at goal. After this the play was very uncertain, both sides scoring several times, and resulted in the Blues winning by 11 points to 7.

At the conclusion the selection committee met, and selected the following team to play against North Canterbury on Saturday :—Full-back, A. Shallard; three-quarters, Macintosh, Perry, Mendelson; halves, Thomas and Gaffaney; forwards, Gillespie, McLean, Matheson, Shallard, A. Hart, Berry, A. Stewart, D. Stewart, and W. McCallum.

The following have been chosen to represent the Waihi second fifteen in their match with the Tirnaru second on Thursday next on the Tirnaru ground :—A. Moore, 11. Bryan, Coles, G. South, Blissett, 11. Opie, A. Bell, Fiefield, Burborough, Ford, Hendersons (3), J. South, and W. Austin. Emergency, Wakely. Mundell’s drag will leave Winchester at 1 o’clock.
