THE SHINGLE QUESTION.

At the usual meeting of the Levels Road Board last Tuesday, Mr E. T. Rhodes moved and Mr A. Mee seconded the following resolution : —“ That this board view the action of the Harbour Board re moving shingle with fear on account of the great expense, and that they should take opinion of the ratepayers before going to so large an expense.” Mr D. Stuart’s scheme for a surf-boat groin at the rock Island was then talked of, and it was stated that there were people in town prepared to put down £5 or £lO each to see the plan tested, Mr Rhodes, for one, was prepared to do so; and if it was no use, or harmful, the thing could easily -be blown up. They always wanted bigger things at Timaru than would do anywhere else. The motion was carried unanimously and ordered to be sent to the Harbour Board. We congratulate the Levels Road Board on the step it has taken. As a general rule members of local bodies will not domore than is laid down for their guidance in the “ hact,” and it is refreshing to see so decided a step taken as that referred to. Their action has our entire sympathy and approval.
