S.C. CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
j*. The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on Friday. _Pre.-, sent—Messrs J. Jackson (chairman), . W. M.. Moore, J. Sinclair, M. Quinn, J. M. Barker, and D, M. Ross. Apologies were received frpm Mr .. McLaren and Dr Thomas. THE RESIDENT SURGEON. The chairman said Dr Somerville had been appointed»surgeon to the Auckland Hospital, and had left. He proceeded to suggest a scheme for doing without any doctor in the hospital, urging that., the work could be done by town doctors. , After a good deal of discussion, Mr Ross moved and Mr Quinn seconded—- “ That respecting the . appointment of a medical attendant to the Timaru Hpspital, the .management be .placed under tlie control of the medical practitioners of Timaru, ; two and two about, at a remuneration of £IOO per annum, this arrangement tp be placed on trial for the ensuing six months.” Amendments by Messrs Moore and Barker ,(1) to call for applications for ? the post of resident surgeon, and (2) to postpone the decision for a month, were lost, and the original motion, with the time altered to three months, was carried by four to two, the dissentients being Messrs Moore and
Barker. Other, resolutions were passed, appointing Mr . Jersey dispenser at a salary of £25 a year, and directing the secretary to communicate the desire of the board to the medical men in town, desiring them to agree to the same * without delay; in the event of their, not consenting, the chairman to callyfor ■;! applications the resident siirgeonship, to be in by next meeting. The secretary presented a return showing that during the month of June 6626 rations were distributed to 7G families, comprising 98 adults and 199 children. charitable Ain. Messrs Perry, Perry, and Kinnerney forwarded draft. of Jn Bill to amend the Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Act, *‘ for the purpose of obviating the injurious results likely to arise in this district in consequence of the construction put by , His. Honor Mr Justice DennistourTupon the. provisions of section, 74 ot the Act. Other clauses were suggested to give charitable aid boards a fuller claim upon fathers of illegitimate children. —The Bill was adopted, and ,the secretary directed ,to send it to the local Member, with a • request : that they press the Government to take up the Bill and pass it this session. A few letters on charitable aid matters were read, and Mr Molloy waited on the board to thank them all for their kindness before leaving for Home, —The chairman stated that this family-man, wife,. and seven children —had, cost; the; board nearly £XbO. Their passage Home cost £B7. ACCOUNTS. ' Accounts amounting to £640 5s 6d were passed for payment, including a progress payment of £l6O on alterations at the barracks. /This leaves the account side, but there is the Government subsidy to come in.
