GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above board was held yesterday. Present — Messrs Flatman (chairman), Do* Renzy, Holland, and Brophy. TENDERS. .Tenders were received and dealt with as under : No. 337—Catting gorse fences, - Geraldine reserves: Wm, Fly, £6 15 s; Phillip Bdckley, £6 10s; Joseph Kenningtbn, £5 (accepted). No, 338 —Cutting gorse fences at reserves, Woodbury: J. Kelliher, £l3 ; 6. Barber, £ll ; E. Murphy, £9 (accepted). Tenders for glazed pipes were received from James Blyth, Temuka; Beford Mills C.; Miles, Archer, and Co#.; and Priest and Holdgate. Priest and Holdgate’s tender at 12in, Is 3d, 9in, 9d, bin, 5d per foot, was accepted. CORRESPONDENCE.

Correspondence Avas read and dealt with as folloAVs : From Mr Allan Macdonald, Woodlands, Woodbury, offering 10s per annum for grazing privileges on gravel reserve, next his house, and £1 per annum for one near Woodbury.—Offer accepted for the one near Woodbury, as from April, 1891. The board could not accept less than £1 for the reserve near the house. From Mr A. Cormack, drawing attention to the unfavorable state of the road on the north side of the Waihi Bush, which requires shingling. —Overseer to attend to same. From Messrs Ralph Elder, Cornelius Cprdy, Thomas Eaton, Reginald Orton, I ahdJonathan Shaw, Woodbury, asking to have the footpath in Church street,' Woodbury, gravelled,—Overseer to

report on same. From Mr George Barber, Wood- , bury, asking permission to plough the near his fence ; also asking

if the board would contribute anything towards removing stones from road- ' side.—Board will allow 6d per yard • for 50 yards. ' From the clerk of the Temuka Road

Board acknowledging receipt oi letter covering rough draft of proposal made to alter the present constitution of the County Council, and enclosing motion .. past at last meeting of Temuka Road . • Board, which has already been published in our columns. From Mr A. K'elman, stating that the valuation, viz., £7 10s, placed on his property lately bought from Mr Postlethwaite was not fair considering S. the property valuation Mr Postlei- -Hhwaite had on it, and also that £8 for Mr McKenzie’s property was not in proportion to the respective figures. He thought £6 was a fair value to put . —After careful ' consideration the board saw no reason to alter the assessment, and would .draw Mr Kelman’s attention to the fact that Mr McKenzie paid only ' £l2 10s per acre, and not £ls as stated in his letter. Wreathall, m requesting that his name be removed ■.from roll as ratepayer for section ™32302, and that of Mr Bruges, '" solicitor, Christchurch, be iftserted in :*,.place thereof.—Mr Bruges’s consent ~, to be obtained. y ' From Mr E. A. Foster, calling at--1 tention to the state of the road from Squire’s to his bush section. The ratepayers were interested in the formation of a new road, and he could not see any reason .-why they should be put,off from month to month to gratify one small landowner. The commissioners pot having reported on these fbads the board cannot move in the matter yet. ' BATES. Mr Brophy moved, Mr Kelland seconded, and it was carried—“ That, an accordance with notice given on the

Bth June last, the board now make and levy a general rate of 5-Bths of a penny in the pound on all rateable property in the Geraldine Road District ; the above rate to include Tiraaru Harbor rate and charitable aid contribution for the current year, and to become payable in one sum on the loth day of August, 1891.”

overseer’s REPORT. The overseer’s report Avas read as folio avs :

Sir, —I have the honor to report for the information of the board as under : The works in hand have made fair progress during the month. The undermentioned contracts have been completed, and passed for payment, viz.: —No. 336, Wreathall’s track, Kakahu Bush; No. 336, building porches at Geraldine. The day men have been employed in effecting repairs on various roads, and in making track applied for by Mr Every to give access to his land on the Waitohi Hills.—Poisoned wheat: A supply has been obtained, as directed, and a quantity issued during the past four Weeks. Gorse nuisance : As arranged, *an inspection of various roads has been made by the members of the board, and summonses taken out for the next sitting of the Court., A large number of notices have been given to grub and clear, and considerable progress has been made all over the district. —Pipes; I have obtained quotations for one truck load of drain pipes, Avhich are now required.;— Repairs: The road on the Geraldine near reserves 1995 and 199, require shingle repairs.—Rate book: Notice has been given of the intentipn to strike a general rate. The rate book has been prepared, and is now ready for the members to sign, Wm. Shirks, • Overseer.

The report was considered satisfactory, and it was decided to obtain 4 bushels of poisoned wheat from Mr Brooks, and to call for tenders for repairs on road on - the Geraldine reserves 1995 and 1199. INTERVIEWS. - Mr Wreathall waited on the board re the application of Mr Foster for the formation of a new road running through his perpetual; lease section in Gapes’ Valley, and asked that one or two members of the board be,deputed to inspect the two roads and give an unbiassed report at next meeting of which road they think is desirable for the public. Mr Wreathall then withdrew and the board read a letter from the Chief Surveyor, which stated that he-would, as soon as possible, inspect the deviation of the road made by Mathias.—lt 'was decided to wait till the Chief Surveyor arrives before taking action in the matter. Mr Lynn waited on the board, asking to have a cutting made and shingle put down on the approach to his property at Rhubarb Flat.—The board decided to leave the matter until September, and then call for tenders. FINANCIAL. The balance-sheet for year ending 3lst of March, 1891, was received from the Auditor-General, duly audited and found correct,

A circular was received from the Auditor-General, stating that-several cases have recently, occurred in which moneys belonging to local bodies had been embezzled by the accountant or collector and the blame had been attached to the Audit office. He wished to point out that the auditor had no means of discovering whether such moneys had been collected or not, and thought the only means by which such deficiency could be prevented was by constant vigilance on the part of members of the boards.

Mr.Deßenzy moved, Mr Brophy seconded, and it was carried—“ That the sum of £SOO falling due at the Bank of New South Wales, Geraldine, on the 16th August, 1891, be placed on fixed deposit for a period of twelve months at current rate of interest at the same bank.”

Mr Brophy moveo, and Mr Deßenzy seconded—“ that the sum of £3OOO, falling due on the 16th July, 1801, at the Bank of New South Wales, Geraldine, be placed on fixed deposit with that bank for a further period of 12 month at current rate of interest.”

Mr Dellenzy moved, Mr. Brophy seconded, and it was carried—-“ That a fixed deposit for £SOO, falling due at the Bank of New Zealand, Geraldine, on the 21st July, 1891, be placed on fixed deposit at the same bank for a period of 6 months at current rates.” Mr Deßenzy moved, Mr Brophy seconded, and it was carried—“ That the sum of £SOO falling due at the Bank of New Zealand, Geraldine, on the 21st July, 1891, be placed on fixed deposit for a period of 12 months at current rates of interest at the same bank.

Mr Deßenzy moved and Mr Brophy seconded and it was carried “ That the sum of £3OOO falling due at the Bank of New Zealand, Geraldine, on the 21st July, 1891, be placed on fixed deposit for a further period of 12 months at current rates at the same Bank.”

The pay sheet amounted to £103125, The board then rose.
