FOOTBALL.

TEMUKA V. UNION (TIMARU). The last of the first series of cup matches took place in the Victoria Park, Temuka, last Thursday between the Temuka first fifteen and the Union club, Timaru. At 4 p.m. Anderson kicked off for Temuka aud during the first spell good and very fast play was witnessed, the visitors being strictly on the defensive. Mendelson made a splendid run right through the Unions backs and got over the line, but lost possession of the ball. Shortly after he scored a try by another splendid run, and it was converted into a goal by Goldstone. After some give and take play Velvin got a second try but failed to score. The second spell was pretty well the same as the first, Mendelson again scoring, as also did Goldstone. The result of the play was Temuka won by six points to nil. The visitors were entirely overmatched as the Temuka backs worked grandly together. It would be hard to select any of the players for special praise, as they all played well, Mendelson played a splendid back game. For the visitors Mcintosh i\nd Hobbs showed up best, while Home, Gardner, and Hall were conspicuous in the forwards. The Rev. W. C. Wood acted as referee, his decisions giving general satisfaction. The usual umpires were dispensed with, but Messrs M. Shepherd and J. Quinn acted as line umpires. The game was played with the utmost good humor throughout.

WAIHI SECOND V. COLONIALS. Teams representing the above clubs met in a combat for the junior flax at Winchester on Thursday last, and the result was an easy win for Waihi, who defeated their opponents by 13 points to nil. The Colonials, were completely overmatched. The flag rests between the Temuka, Waihi, and Union seconds, and the contest will be very keen.

DARKTOWN V. THE STAR (TIMARU). These two clubs met in Timaru on Thursday last, and after a hard tussle, in which the Temuka junior team played their usually excellent game, they were defeated by 6 points to 3. The Darktown Club has never met a team on their merits. It is composed of very youthful players, and wherever they meet a team they always have to play against men. Such was the case in Timaru. A short time ago they met a Geraldine team, and, in addition to other men, amongst their opponents was Turnbull, who, it is whispered will be picked in the representative team. For their age and weight it would be hard to beat the Darktown boys.

There will be a scratch match in the Victoria Park this afternoon, when it is to be hoped there will be a good attendance of players. The ball will be on the ground at 3.30 p.m. As the Temuka second journey to Timaru next Thursday to play the last of the first round of cup matches a ball will be on the ground every afternoon for practice.
