TEMUKA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

. One of,the above society’s enjoyable socials came off last Thursday evening in the. Volunteer Dnllshed, and was well attended, Sir William and Lady Blund'en being amongst those present. The hall was splendidly decorated by Mr T. £. Gunnion, who is to be comon the good taste he -displayed in arranging everything. The catering, which was carried eut jby the committee, was all that could be desired. The refreshment table was presided over by Misses McLeod and Aokroyd. A little hitch occurred, to

which, by request, we desire to call attention. On such occasions it is usual with the gentlemen to attend on the ladies, and take refreshments to them before partaking of any themselves. The custom was reversed last Thursday evening in most instances, and it was painful to those who witnessed it to see the ladies sitting down all round the hall and waiting, while their partners in the last dance gourraandised unsparingly at the refreshment table. It is to be hoped this will not occur again, as it is a very unpleasant task for us to have to put such evidence of rudeness in print. There was, however, an abundant supply for all, and it was 'very fortunate that it was so, as otherwise the ladies would have had to go without any at all. The programme, as usual, consisted of dancing and I singing, the performance being opened with bagpipe music by Mr Mabin, who played in his usual excellent style. The songs were: ‘ Mary of Argyle,’ by Mr W, Storey; 'At the Ferry,’ Miss Lee; ‘ Mother’s Last Letter,’ Mr Chapman —all of whom sang excellently. Mrs Clark played a selection of Scotch airs on the piano in her uenally finished style, and Mr McCarthy, accompanied by Miss Quinn, played a violin solo in a most artistic manner. The singers were accompanied on the piano by Misses Quinn and Lee and Mr B. McLeod. The usual programme of dances was gone through to the excellent music of Messrs McCarthy (violin) and Levens (piano), and the whole affair wound up with *Auld Lang Syne.’ The managing committee consisted of Messrs J. McCaskill, I). Henry, 0. Newbury, J, Naughton, J. McLeod, F. Archer, and A. W. Mann, and they deserve credit for the success of the entertainment.
