STANLEY INSULTED.
The explorer, Henry M. Stanley, when about beginning a lecture at the Albert Hall, Sheffield, on the evening of May 15th, was interrupted by a man walking up the passage, and handing about pamphlets from a large bag. On the cover was " Stanley's Exploits, or civilising Africa." The book was thought to be at first one of Stanley's lectures, but it proved to be a violent attack upon him. A cry of "Put him out," meaning the distributor, was then made. A second man was circulating books, in the gallery. The same cry was speedily taken up there, and some of the audience threatened the distributors. Being reinforced by friends, the latter showed fight.which was only prevented by police, who eeieed the principal offenders and ejected them from the hall. Stanley was cheered on his appearance by a large audience. At the conclusion of the lecture he left the building unattended, and entered the carriage in waiting for him, whereupon a crowd that had gathered on the corner ran towards the vehicle, surrounded it, and tried to asßult the explorer. The police charged and routed the crowd, and Stanley suffered no evil effects.
