FATAL LABOR RIOTS.
Six women, several children, and eight men were killed in a labor trouble at Fourmies, France, on May let and 2nd, twenty persons besides were seriously wounded. The soldiers who did this 'Slaughter were merely exposed to stone throwing, but they returned this by successive volleys from their rifles, inflicting frightful wounds. The houses in the line of fire were riddled, and every sign of 'wanton and reckless inhumanity was shown by the troops. .The local popular commotion was intense, and found a response in every centre in the country. The tension of feeling at Fourmies may be judged by the fact that the military were hailed with crieh’ of “ Viye la Prassie! ” The commander of the troops, in his report to the Minister of War, assumed full responsibility for the action of his men. He only ordered firing, he wrote, when the soldiers were in danger of being killed or disarmed. Emile Zola censured the Government for causing the disaster by its bombastic announcement of armed preparation, and added if the meeting bad, been allowed to be held as in BnglandJnbthing would have happened.
