ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
GENERAL SUMMARY. (European dates May 29.) On Saturday)’ May 24th, Lord Eomilly upset a paraffin lamp in the ;drawing-room of his residence, and attempted .to extinguish the fire that followed. Shortly after) the butler, smelling smoke, began to investigate, and found his master lying senseless in' the' room; which was all'ablaze. He was removed to the Hospital, )where alb attempts to revive him failed. The firemeu on entering the house found Blanche Griffeb and Emma Lovell also insensible. They [ were removed to the Hospital, were it was found that both were dead. Byrne, a fireman, received aeriods injuries. Lord Douglas, brother to the Mai quis of Queenaberry, committed suicide in London on May sth by cutting his throat with a razor. He had travelled from Ireland during the night, and behaved in such a manner that the railroad officials ordered one of the employes to accompany him to London. On arriving there Lord Douglas put up at an hotel, but subsequently eluded his attendant,' and ended' his' life ia the manner -stated. j . A heavy fall of snow occurred in Wales and also in Cumberland County, England, on May 16, ; In London the' weather was bitterly cold on the same, date, with a heavy hailstorm in the morning. The cold carried off a large number of influenza patients who were hovering between life and death. The “ Natioanl Press” on May 18th announced that Lord Wolsoley, new Commander-in-chief of the military forcas in Ireland, had become a Home Ruler. He does not see the danger from a military point of view in granting Home Rule to Ireland. Early in the morning on May 19 the Liverpool police found in the Mersey a sailor’s clothing bag in which was the dead body of a boy, apparently not over fifteen years. The body bad been recently killed. His throat was cut from ear to eaW and his legs severed' from his body. A. new knife and saw were found with the remains. On the body was painted the name ** Tam Girvini” But farther than this, there was ho clue to the murderer. The police are searching all the ships and sailors’ resorts for “ T am” or some person who may know him or his bag, as a means of discoVering the,perpetrator. The May bulletin of the Bureau df Industries, gives, a-chesriug forecast the yield of fruit and grain in the Dominion. So bright an outlook, it says, has not been presented for many years for a full wheat crop in Ontario. . Tcbeng Ki Chong, First Secretary to the Chinese Legation in London and Paris foi six years, suddenly) disappeared on April 14, causirig great sensation m diplomatic circles. Early this spring he opened negotiations with two London banks and the Banque do Paris for a loan, for £140,000. He departed for (China at the time named, leaving debts and defalcations amounting to large sums,. The Times says that it is the most scandalous absue of diplomatic pty viliges known in this country. The Banqne de Paris is a heavy loser.
