FOOTBALL.

ONION (TIMAKU) V. WAIHI. This match came off last Thursday at Winchester, and we regret to say that we have not room for a full report of it. We can merely say that Waihi won the match by four points to one. Of the Union backs Macintosh and Hobbes, were the best, the latters collaring being superior to any on the ground. Their forwards played a good loose game, Padget, Hall, Gardner and Berry, being especially smart at dribbling and collaring. Of the Waihi Morrison and Opie, halves, made some good runs, but would have helped their side better by feeding the three* quarters mere. A; IShallard played the best all round back game on the ground at three-quarter, and would have scored two or three times bad he received more passes. Of the forwards P. Hart, P. Shallard and A. Stewart did a large amount of useful work, while D. Stewart was seen to advantage in the loose. Wakely and Blake would do well to put a little more strength into the scrums. The game wee noticeable for an absence of disputes, which gave the referee and umpires less trouble than usual iu the fulfilment of their duties. The Bev. W. C. Wood acted as referee, and Messrs H. E. Smith and J. Anderson as umpires, their decisions meeting with pleasing approval. A pleasing ceremony took place just before the game began when Mrs H. B. Smith presented the Waihi Pootball Club with a handsome flag. It is made of "satin, on which were worked the letters “ Waihi P. 0.” and also the colors of the club, red, white, > and blue. Mrs Smith wished the Club • every success and hoped the team would come out victorious under the flag through the season. Mr Xoang, on behalf of the Misses Toung, presented a referee and umpire flag to the Club. Mr P. Shallard briefly responded and called upon the team for three cheers for the donors, which were heartily given. In the' evening

the visitor* were entertained at the Wolsely Hotel, where the Misses Young presented the home team with neat red, white, and blue rosettes.
