VILLAGE SETTLEMENT

Speaking at Ohnstehurih last Friday Mr J. E. March, Steward of Reserves, said:—Without going into further details, he said the total results in respect of the various settlements were 166 taken up under village homestead special settlement conditions, on which were located 517 souls, area allotted 5217 acres, area cultivated 3613 acres, sum advanced for dwelling-houses £2260, the amount paid for rent £IBSB 15s 9d, and in interest £295 10s making a total paid of £2149 6s 9d. The arrears on December 31st last were £9l 6s lid. The settlers had altogether 255 horses, 453 bead of cattle, 295 pigs, 2228 head of poultry, and, 80 sheep. The improvements (buildings, outbuildings and fencing) were of the value of £10,665, If the sum advanced by Government was deducted, the actual value of the improvements made by the settlers themselves was £8405. So far as the law would allow every encouragement would be given settlers to enable them to extend their holdings, and eveiy endeavour would be made to obtain in the} Canterbury Provincial district land adapted for village settlement purposes. r ■
