FOOTBALL.
TEMUKA FIRST T. WAIHI FIRST. The opening game in the annual senior contest for the supremacy of South Canterbury, took place at Temuka on Saturday last, but owing to the preceding bad weather the teams were not fully represented, and the slippery nature of the ground rendered good play impossible. She game was mainly confined to the forwards, in which department Waihi excel, whereas individual back play was not witnessed. Owing to the late arrival of the Waihi team, twe short spells ef 80 minutes each were played. Temuka kicked off and for the first part of the spell bad the advantage, (Serum and line work followed with great rapidity, relievsd occasionally by grand loose rushes, Waihi led by Harts, Shallard, and Stewart, and Temuka by Oaffaney, who played a sterling forward game, Brosnahan, McKinlay, and Anderson. During the first spell Temuka had Waihi in their own 25’s, and playing with dash carried the ball under the posts. Harding, for Waihi, just saving his side. Half time was called without any seore, though Waihi had several unsuccessful attempts at goal from marks. On play resuming the Waihi forwards, who always play a good packed game, charged Temuka lines repeatedly, and would certainly have scored, but for the collaring of the Temuka backs. Continuing their tactics they carried the ball over the line, aid Wakely drew first blood amidst applause. The try was not converted, but from the kick out they again became offensive, and T. Hart again got over, no increase of score resulted. As. time was drawing short the Temuka men played up and shifted the play into the visitor’s quarters. Here Anderson made a good run bat no score resulted, boon after the whistle sounded, leaving the visitors winners by two points to ml. Sough play by Waihi forwards marred the game, and the repeated and wilful off-side play indulged in by D. Stewart was not in keeping with Bughy football, and the result of the match was
greatly due to tbia fact. Armitage, the Temuka half, was by far the best on the ground, his play was grand; he is an acquisition to the team, and without a doubt one of the best halves that has played on the ground this season, F, Storey, at full-back was excellent, taking the ball smartly, getting hit kiek with promptitude and making bo
mistakes. A. Shallard as centra three quarter was good, but the other backs were but indifferent, Gillespie getting hurt during the first fire minutes. Of the Waibi forwards Stewart, Sballard, Hart (2), and Wakelj, were the best. .For Temuka Brosuahan, Gaffanej, Anderson, McKinlay, and Polaschek | showed best at times. On the
whole the Temuka forwards played a very uacembined game, which without a doubt lost them the match. Messrs H. Smith and J. W. Yelvin umpired
respectively for Waihi and Temuka, whilst Mr J. McOaskill in the responsible office of referee discharged discharged his onerous duties well, bis decisions being strictly fair, thus giving great satisfaction to both teams.
WAIHI SECOND V. TEMUKA SECOND.
The first match between the above teams for the Junior Flag was played
at Winchester on Saturday last, and resulted io a draw, neither side scoring, I. Bhssett captained the home team and E. Eobinson the risitors, Owing to the sloppy state of the ground and wet state of the ball, geed play was impossible. The ball was kicked of by Robinson and being returned by Opie a series of scrums resulted, from one of which MeCaskiil and Rogers took the ball over the line and narrowly escaped scoring. On the ball being kicked out scrum after scrum was formed till half lime wee called. Temuka haring the best ot the game throughout the spell. The second spell was neticeable for the grand rushes made by either team. Henry, Bogers, McLean and Storey doing splendid work for Temuka, while Henderson, Austin, Opie, and Ford worked well for Waibi. Towards the end of the spell the Waihi men for the first time during the game were really dangerous, and would doubtless hare scored but for the combined play ef the Temnka forwards, who: cleared their line and rushed the ball to the centre of the field, Shortly after time wai called. Of the Temnka min Bogers, MoOaskill, Storey, Henry, and McLean,, played well up, while Hassell played kis usual sure game as fallback, while Henderson (2), Austin, South, Bryan, and Moore did good work for Waihi. Messrs H. F. Harte and E. S. Smith acted as umpires, whilst the Ber. W. 0. Woed earned the referee's whistle, his decisions being received without comment.
