Prohibition Meetings—A number of meetings are advertised in toother column. Largs Sals —Messrs Mundell and Co. yesterday sold 1050 fat sheep by private treaty for the satisfactory price of between 15s and 16s each. Alteration of Date of Sale.— Owing to Monday next being a holiday Mr W. S. Maslin has altered the date of hia furniture sale from Monday to Tuesday. Social Gathering. —The members of the Geraldine Kills corps hold one of their winter social gatherings on Thursday evening next in their hall, Geraldine. Embezzlement.—At Dunedin yesterday George Jumes Claik, late secretary to the Oddfellows Lodge at Port Chalmers, was committed for trial for embezzlement.
Holiday Fares -To-day is the last day on which excursion tickets to Dunedin ana Christchurch, available for return until July, can ba obtained at the Temuka railway station. Furniture Sale.— Mr W. S. Maslin advertises that on Tuesday next he will hold a clearing sale of household furniture and effects on account of Mr H. JN. Hiskens, who is leaving the district.
OeituAßY. —The funeral of the late Mr Andrew Keid took place in Geraldine yesterday. Ho was given a grand Masonic funeral, and the brethren mustered very a rong ut it. The attendance was very Inge, the deceased having been yery and deservedly popular. School CoMMrrrßß.-rThe Education Board of Otago carried a resolution forbidding teachers taking part in school elections, snd agreed to inlinute to the Minister that the School Committee Election Act is generally defective, except that it abolished the cumulative vote. Dunedin Art Gallery.—A letter was received from the Hon. R. Oliver M.L.G., stating that he was shipping seven pictures which he bad purchased for presentation to the Art Gallery. They are by wed-known artists, mostly French, and hsve been on view recenlty in some of the leading exhibitions. The Frisco Mail. —The Frisco Mail left Onehunga in the steamer Oreti at 10 30 yesterday morning. She expected to reach Wellington late to night, and the southern part will be cispatched to ’Lyttelton by the steauer Mahinaptia leaving at 10 o’clock on Sunday morning. The Midland Railway Company. —The Cabinet bas had the dispute between Mr Soddonand the Midland Railway Company under consideration, and it is anticipated the difficulty will be settled in a day or two. The Company will be requested, as one condition, to start work immediately.
Oahabu Licensing Petition.-* The Oamara licensing election petition was take* at the Oamaru 15. M. Court yesterday Mr Newton was engaged on behalf of the petitioners, end Mr A. S. Adams, of Dunedin for the respondents. Mr Newton, on the firit petition he argued that as the nomina-' tion papers weae issued for the licensing district of Oamaru instead of the Oamaru licensing district which is the name gazetted, the nominations are yoid. His Worship gave judgement on the first petition, and the petition was thrown out. Burolart.— On last Monday night a boarder in the Royal Hotel, Timaro, was awakened by someone in bis room. Be gave the alarm, aod the licensee, Mr i<]gan, on making examination found that someone had entered through the scullery window and went through the rooms, taking a watch and some money from the occupants until at last be was disturbed. Information was given to the police, and his track was followed to Winchester, where a man who gave the name of Charles Richard Jones was arrested on suspicion. He had been employed in the hotel previously. He was taken into Timaru and remanded. The Land Department. About 60 residents met at Invercargill to bid good-bye to Mr Spence, who has been Commissioner of Crown Lands, and chief surveyor of.the Southland district many years, and who has retired from the Public Service rather than take effice in Westland to which the Minister of Lands ordered
bun to be removed. An and rose was presented to Mr Spence, who in returning thanks, spoke with warmth and vigor about the management of the department by thej recent Minlitor, who earns in for hard knocks. Several speakers said they had been disappointed io Mr NcKsazie. It had been their desire to give the Ballance Government a fair and honest trial, but their opinion had been changed by the action of the Minister of Lands, sad if the same methods were practised in other districts they must lead to a collapse of the present Ministery.
Cahtbhbuet Jookbi Club. At iha annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club, the statement of accounts showed that the total income for the year was £11,603 15s 3d, and the expenditure £11,051 12* lOd. Profit was made on each of the four meetings —on the Grand National Meeting, £294 17s 6d Spring Meeting £524 2i; Summer Meeting £5 2s 6d; and Autumn Meeting £95 9s Bd. The revenue derived from the totslisator was £556 &s 91 in excess of that received for 1839 90. Ihe report stated that further improvements were contemplated. The report aud balance sheet were unanimoosly adopted. Mr F. 0. Tabart was re-elected judge ; Mr G. Q-. Stead treasurer ; and Mr Thomas Acland clerk of the scales. The committee and stewards were almost the same as those of lost year. ,

This library is now open every Saturday evening bet ween 6 and 7, and as a fresh supply of books has been obtained it should bo freely patronised, especially during i h ) winter months. Friendship Guild. —This is the title of a society formed in Kington* for the promotion of friendship, and the cultivation of ft kindly feeling. vv e wonder how many of the seine line of business will join it. A Correction. —By some unaccountable means the name of Captain Rattray got into the paragraph published in our Thursday’s issue re the Salvation Army, Geraldine. Captain Furlong's name should be read in plaoe of Captain Rattray’s. Sheep on the Railway. William Copeland was fined Is and 2s expenses in Ttmarn yesterday for having allowed sheep to wander on the railway. It was proved that it wse an accidental matter, and could not have been helped. Temuka Caledonian Sooistt,— There was ft large attendance at the first social of the above society, which was held in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, last evening. A long and varied programme was gone throngh, of which particulars will be given in oar mxt issue.
Temuka Bibles.— The members of this corps will parade at 9 a.m. on Monday next prior to the prize firing. Members not on parade will be disqualified from firing fer the prizes, unless they furnish a good excuse for absence. In the evening a grand social will be held in the Volunteer Hall.
• Volunteer Parade.—A special parade of the volunteers was held on Wednesday evening. Captain Outten wan in command. Lieut. Whithhead was present, and 35 rank and file. Colonel Bailey, who had called the parade, sent a telegram expressing bis .regret that he was unable to attend, and intimated hia intention of inspecting them at a later date. The company were exercised for an hour of so, and dismissed.
I.O.G.T.—At a meeting of the Welcome Retreat Lodge, Geraldine, on Monday, 28tb, installation night, reports were received from the secretary, treasurer, and S.J.T., which were highly encouraging. The number of proposals for membership and initiatian now take up so much time of the lodge that there has not been much chance of indulging in harmony, but next Monday, 25th, will see a fresh start mads with'the winter open lodge season, besides which meetings to give scientific and political instructions will be held regularly in future.
