SOCIAL AT TEMUKA.
The social held in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, on Tuesday evening last, under the auspice* of the Temuka Football Club, was a great success. There were persons present from Timaro, Winchester, and surrounding districts, fully couples taking part in the dancing. The ball had been artistically decorated by the members of the club with flags and evergreens. From tbe ceiling above the front of tbe stage was suspended tbe banner of the Temuka Football Club, beneath which was tbe word “ Welcome,” worked in red letters on white groundwork, with blue marginals. After the proceedings bad been opened with the ‘•March polka,” the footballers gathered no tbe stage round tbe ball, which was borne by tbe vice-captain, Mr J, Gillespie. Mr J. Anderson, the skipper of tbe dab, then addressed the assemblage. He said he was pleased to see so many present. It was particular!} pleasing to behold the large number there from other clubs, as it had a tendency ; o create a friendly feeling between tbe various clubs affiliated to the S.C. Rugby Union. Speaking on matters connected with tbe olub, be said the membership was large and their financial position satisfactory. Members were taking more interest in the club’s welfare, and in view of the match with Liowood and Cup matches they had taken tbe drillshed for their practices. He then called on the secretary, Mr W; Storey, to rend a letter which be bad received from Mr J. T. M. Hsyburst, the dob’s popular president, which be did as follows: “ Green Hayes, May 9, 1891. Mr Wm. fto RET, Jvnr., Temuka. Dear Sir, —I have to thank you for your invitation to a social next Tuesday. I have delayed replying owing to an uncertainty as to whether I should be able to attend or not, and I am sorry to say that I shall be unable to be present ewing to an important meeting being called (hat evening, which I must attend. I enclose you a cheque for £2 2a towards the funds of your olub.—Yours truly, J. T. M. Hayhttrst.” This was greeted with applause. After the singing of “On tbe ball” by tbe footballers, Mr E. McLeod played a selection of Scotch airs, which was well received, After the first set bad been gone through Mr J. McCaskill sung Battle of Stir ing” in grand style. The next item was a polka mazurka, which was followed by an excellent rendition of the song “Fisherboy *’ by Miss Roberts, for which she was loudly applauded. Mr D. Chalmers pleased those present b} dancing a sailor’s hornpipe, which was succeeded Wy a plain sobpttische.. Mr Frederiokson caused much amusement with his cob : er’s dance, and Mias Gimson received an ovation for a well-rendered song, “ The meeting of tbe waters.” After the alberta Mr J, McCaskill contributed tbe pathetic song “ Eileen AHanab,” which elicited a hearty response from the audience. Tbe quadrilles and a waltz brought the programme to refreshments, which were abundant and of au exceptionally high quality, c >tered for by Mr D. McCask 11 in his usual p casing style. The second part comprise I >n all some 13 dances, and the gathering broke up shortly after 3 o’clock. Misses McLeod and GUmson accompanied the singers on the piano. Messrs Levens and Goodwillie supplied the music, an I Mr W. McOallum made an efficient M.C. The secretary deserves a special word jf praise for the energetic manner in wh oh he worked to bring the social to a successful issue.
