Wellington, May 6. At tbe police court to-day for being illegally ou premises a Justice of the Peace sentenced a man to twelve months’ imprisonment with bard labor. Westport, May 6. An elderly woman named Jane Brown, an old resident, was found dead in her bed this afternoon. She leaves a family all grown up. Lyttelton, May 6.
Alfred Burch, aged 25, was found this morning with bin throat cut. He was suffering from erysipelas in tbe head. He was the fourth son of the late Captain Burch. Oheistchuboh, May 6
Malcolm Orton, charged at the police court this morning with having supplied noxious things to Agnes Lane at Timaru, and arrested on warrant, was remanded to appear at Timaru on Friday. May 7.
In the E.M* Court, yesterday, befoore Mr Bichmond Beetham and three J.P.’s, John Ingram, licensee of the Provincial Hotel, was fined £2O, and declared disqualified to hold a license in future, and the license of the hotel forfeited for permitting bis bouse to be the resort of prostitutes, and allowing them to remain longer than was necessary to procure refreshment. The evidence showed that the house was simply a brothel. To-day the S.B. Christchurch Licensing Committee granted a temporary transfer of the license to Philip Mohr. Abhbubton, May 7. A girl of fourteen and a boy of eleven were charged to-day technically with stealing turnips. They lived without a mother, but on their father’s twenty acre section near ’Methven. The father was constantly absent, and the children were entirely neglected and almost wild. They created a scene in court. They were committed to Burnham till the age of fifteen, the father paying 5s per week for each. Dunedin, May 6. A young man named .Edward Martin, who says he is seventeen, but looks younger, was captured tonight while ho was breaking into Gable’s produce store in George street. A bunch of keys of various sizes was found on him. The police believe all the recent burglaries were committed by him. He has been before the court before for.stealing: May 7. At the police court to-day Walter Spurliag was committed for trial today for false pretences, by which he obtained eight horses, a bridle and surcingle. Accused was arrested at Lyttelton.
