ENTERTAINMENT AND COFFEE SUPPER.
The first of a senes of entertainments to be held iu connection with the Primitive Methodist Church, Geraldine, was given on Tuesday evening. Unfortunately for the gathering, but fortunately for the country, the night turned out very wet, with the result that the attendance was far from being large, only about 60 being present. Those who braved the weather, however, were amply rewarded by having a really enjoyable evening. - The choir was under the leadership of Mr A. Sherratt, Miss Andrews and Mr T. Sherratt presiding at the harmonium. Mr Maslin occupied the chair. The meeting was opened with the chorus ‘There is a Land, a Sunny Land.’ The Rev. W. C. Wood having offered prayer, a chorus was sung by the choir. Mr C. E. Sherratt followed with a reading from the life of Billy Bray. The quartette 4 Lo I My Shepherd ’ was rendered by Mrs H, N. Hiskens, Miss Andrews, and Messrs J. Herdman and C- E. Sherratt very sweetly. Miss IST. Bowkett recited ‘ Jem’s Sister ’ very effectively. Mr E. Logan contributed the solo ‘ When We Climb the Golden Mountain.’ The quartette and chorus 4 There is a Green Hill Ear Away ’ was an enjoyable item. Misses Edna Sherratt and Fanny Gibson sang the pretty duet ‘They are Waiting to Welcome us There’ very sweetly. Miss F. Hawke recited, with much Reeling, the pathetic piece ‘ The Little Outcast,’ the touching story of the death of a little Arab, affecting all present. Mies Andrews sang ‘ Winter’s Story,’ a piece which told a somewhat similar tale. The quartette and chorus * We are Meeting for the Promise ’ was rendered by the choir, and also the chorus * Come Near Me, OMy Saviour.’ The solo 4 Come Unto Me ’ was an exceedingly good one. The duet ‘Hark! ’Tis the Voice of the Saviour,’ to the tune of ‘ Whispering Hope,’ was sung by Mrs H. N- Hiskens and Miss Andrews. The quartette, for four male voices, 4 Glory Ever Be to Jesus ’ was ably rendered by Messrs E. Logan, A. Jones, J. Herdman, and C. E. Sherratt. The Rev. W. C. Wood gave a most amusing and telling recitation illustrative of the absurd reasoning, or rather non-reasoning, of socalled freethinkers. In response to an imperative recall he gave ‘ The Lifeboat,’ a thrilling piece depicting the wreck of a vessel and of a human soul, and the rescue achieved by the lifeboat and by the Saviour of the world. The choir followed with the chorus 4 He o'ame to Bethany.* Quartette 4 Our Light Affliction,’ Mrs H. N. Hiskens and Miss Andrews, and Messrs J. Herdman and 0. E. Sherratt; solo, ‘What Will You Do With Jesus?’ Mrs H. N, Hiskens. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded to the ladies who had provided eatables, and to all who had taken part in the singing. The choir having sung the chorus 4 God Be With You Till We Meet Again,’ the Rev. Mr Wood pronounced the benediction, and the meeting terminated.
