ST. SAVIOUR’S CHURCH, TEMUKA.
PROPOSED PARISH ROOM. A meeting of parishioners of St. Saviour’s Church was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Temuka, on Thursday evening. There was a very moderate attendance. The Rev. T. A. Hamilton presided, and haying recapitulated his remarks upon the desirability of building a parish room, as given at the annual meeting of parishioners (printed in reports issued to adherents), proceeded to give some idea of a building erected at Ashburton for a similar purpose, and also stated that Messrs Comer and Larcombe had kindly prepared a plan and specification of a building likely to answer the purpose required. The vestry were in favor of the scheme, and there appeared to be a sum of £2OO available already. Eeplyiug to Mr Bann, the chairman said that a number of people.that be had spoken to were of opinion that the work would go ahead if pushed vigorously. He agreed with Mr Toyce that the church was not a proper place for Sunday School. Children lost all reverence for the church when it was used for school purposes. In reply to Mr A. Nicholas be said be was himself in favor of a section being acquired as a site for a parish room. One was available close at hand. After some general discussion as to whether it would be better to purchase a special site for the proposed building Mr Bann asked if there was auy suggestion as to how the balance of the money required was to be raised. The chairman said in addition to circulars asking assistance it had been suggested that a sura of perhaps thirty or forty pounds could be raised by a gift auction and social evening. Mr Bann moved —“ That this meeting is of opinion that a Sunday School should be erected, and that steps be taken to at once ascertain what assistance ia likely to be available, and if the promises justify such a coarse that its erection be proceeded with forthwith.” Mr Yoyce seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr Herbert moved vestry act as a building committee, with power to add to their number, and be empowered to proceed with the work provided they have available three-fourths of the cost of the proposed building.” Seconded by Mr Larcombe and carried. It was decided, on the motion of M r Bann, seconded by Mr Comer, to issue subscription lists and circulars inviting aid, and also to hold a gift auction of produce and social gathering on Thursday, May 21st, A few minor details with regard to the appointment of collectors, etc., were then settled. The chairman expressed his pleasure at the resolution arrived at, and hoped everything would go forward successfully. Mr Pilbrow msved, and Mr Bann seconded—“ That the thanks of the j meeting be accorded to Messrs Comer j and Larcombe for their kindness in I drawing up plans and specifications of tho proposed building.” This was carried unanimously. The meeting then terminated, the chairman pronouncing the Benediction.
