POLITICAL.
Wellington, April 20. It has been decided to summoa Parliament for Thursday, Juno 11, The Ministers of Linda and Mines have some visits to p iy to the outlying districts, which prevents an earlier session. Mr Seddoti was to have left for Auckland to-morrow, but has received a subpoena in the charge against Captain Falconer, which may delay hom till Tuesday. He opens the battery at the Puh.puhi goldfield, and next month "ill visit the Otago goldfield. The alterations in the Justice Department include the placing of the District Courts in the Soulh Island under one judge instead of two, the second judge to be employed in another capacity. There will be some rearrangements, and one or two reductions in the magistracy. The total saving in salaries will be £3COO, and about £2OOO will be saved on extraneous expends. The Minister believes that still further savings can be made without dismissing or reducing any one. There will be no rattenchment in the Education Department, but by the exercise of prudence it is hoped to keep the vote under last year’s, after allowing for annual increase of children. The expenditure on native schools will be kept within the limit, aud the Minister proposes to introduce a bill giving the Education T>t-y partmcnt power to hand these schools over to education boards at any time on such terms as may be agreed upon. The Ministers consider that the time has arrived when the Maoris ought to make esetvea for tliaolr schools as Europeans lave done. Judge Ward will have charge of the 3isliict Courlti of the South Island and Fudge Bread’s services will be retained in >tber capacities in the Nelson District,
