Calcutta, April 17. Serious riots are taking place at Benares, and the military have been called oat to protect the banks and other public buildings from the ravages of tbs mob. April I*. The riot at Benares has been quelled, but before peace was restored the rioters wrecked the British station and plan* dered the Treasury chest. The riot was in consequence of the razing of a temple for a e site for new waterworks. After severe fighting on Santana Ridge the Miranzais were routed, Colonel Cranmer, and Major Kgerton, and four of the regulars were wounded. The British force is advancing on to other positions held by the natives.
