AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD
The monthly meeting of the above board was held last night. "Present—Messrs E. B'bwn, E. Carr, and A. Russell. Mr E. Brown was voted to the chair.
CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read as follows— Prom tbo Commissioner of Crown Lands, covering plans' of the proposed garden reserves in Arowhenua, and stating that Mr Quo. Bdgeler bad been in communication with the Land Office upon the subject, and that although it was difficult to understand how any person resident in the township cou’d object to reserves being made having for their object the improving and beautifying of the place, still be (the commissioner) thought it advisable that the plan of proposed reserves should be open for inspection at the board’s office, so that any objections thereto might be made prior to tbo reserves being gazetted. —The board considered the plan, and coo* sidered that the reserves as plotted out won d be of advantage to the settlers.—Mr Brown eiid that he would have no objection if the reserve nearest sections 534 and 535 were continued to his fence, lie did not desire to stand in the way of the settlers in any shape.—Mr Russell moved : ‘ ‘ That the board adopt Uie plan, wi>h the additions of those portions ol’ laud between the creek and seciioos 689 and 690, 534 and 635, and also that trudiiog eict'ons 695, 696,.597, 598, and 699, ami also a email piece now fenced in by Mr G. Washington, an j doing section 730.’ —Seconded by Mr Carr and carried. —The clerk was requested to inform Mr Baker that should the reserves be gazetted, the board would probably let them in subdivisions, to accommodate adjoining occupiers.
From the Property Tax Commissioner, stating that a voucher for the payment of £7 2a 6d subsidy, under “ The Local Bodies Powers and Finance Act,” had been sent to the Treasury for payment. From the Treasury, stating that the above amount had been remitted to the board’s credit at the Bank of New Zealand, Temuka. .From the clerk Temuka Town Board, covering a copy of resolution passed by that board inviting the co-operation of the Aronhenua Town Board in the appointment of a ranger for the townships jointly,,, to facilitate the keeping of the clear of cattle.—The clerk to receipt of the letter, and state that the board is of opinion that for all purposes in connection with Arowhenua the services of the poundkeoper are at present sufficient. From Mr George Washington, stating that his attention had been drawn to a report made at the last meeting of the board by Mr Douglas to the effect that the creek was being polluted by drainage from a stable and pigstye erected on a reserve near his premises, and giving a denial to the same. From the same, stating that he had drawn the overseer's attention to a fireplace erected by Mr Douglas on the aide of the street near the creek, and that the place being used for washing clothes filth was allowed to tun into ttio creek. He trusted the board would sto to same. He further applied to have the creek cleaned from his residence to Mr Burton’s, it being choked with reeds, and since the upper part had been cleared mud hsd gathered in the creek: and rendered the water unfit for use. Ha offered to do the work at la per chain.—Tne board thought that failing '< other complaint from settlers lower down of polluiion from this source that they could not move in the matter.

Tha overseer reported as follows : “I hive ilie honor to report thut since last board day the cleaning of the creek as far as lavender’s bridge has been completed. A portion of the creek from Washington's to the cemetery should also be cleaned, as the water is somewhat backed up. Water is also standing in the branch creek near Mr P. Manning’s, and some of the weeds therein should be removed. The bridge at Mr Manning’s has been widened, and the old planks on hand have boon used in improvements to the other bridge in John street, which is now fit to carry a saddle horse. The oon'ractor for carting shingle did not come to commence work for 8 or 10 days, and after consulting with the chairman the work was given to the next tenderer, who bis completed the contract this day (8 l>). I h.ve had several complaints made as to the sanitary condition of a part of the township, and have suggested to certain occupants a means of improvement. The genetal condition of the place ts f nny ho li'hy,” It was resolved that the portion of the creek near Mr Manning’s he cleared, end that Mr Washington's offer ha accepted, payment in respect of same to be made half-yearly. The overseer was instructed to write to certain occupants re their closet arrangements, and have the nuisances complained of abated at once. The overseer stated that he had been requested by Mr Newbury to draw attention of the board to an unsightly hole in Rayner street. He hud inspected same and considered that the proper couise would be to form the street, that to cart soil to it would bo a waste of money. Mr Russell had also seen the place, and agreed with the overseer. The boaid decided to hold the ipatter oyer foy the present.
The overseer was instructed to have a gate erected to tile board’s premises. accounts. Accounts to the amount of £l9 3a 1 d were passed for payment, and Ike meeting terminated.
