GERALDINE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A special meeting of this committee was held in Mr Pearpoint's office on Friday afternoon for the purpose of considering a letter from the head master re granting a holiday to the children on the 16 th inst., the day of N the picnic. Present—Mesßrs R. H. Pearpoint (chairman), W S Maslin, A White, and J Eiordan. COUBESPOOTDEITCE. The chairman read over the letter he had forwarded to the head master re granting a holiday as follows: " April 9, 1891. "To J. Aitkek, Esq., G-eraldine. " Dear Sir, —It has been decided by the committee to hold the school treat on Thursday, the 16th inst., on which day a holiday will be given. It is desired that the children assemble at the school at 1 o'clock and march down to the domain. I am sending 12 memo, books, which kindly hand to - suitable children to collect what they can toward I he expense.—Tours truly, " li. H. Peabpoint, " Chairman 0.5. C."

The master's reply was as follows: '" Sir, —In my opinion there have lately been enough holidays, when the treat could have been given. Had the committee advertised the concert there would have been also enough money without any collecting. I, therefore, do not approve of the proposed school treat, ,and shall not ask any of the children to collect at this time of the year, because it unsettles their minds from their work. Ido not intend to take any hand in the proceedings. I return your jnemo. books herewith.—J.A."

The letter caused a good deal of comment by the members, all of whom were of the opinioo that the master's treatment of the committee was highly discourteous.

The chairman stated that all the arrangements for the treat were now about completed. The whole of the provisions, etc., had been ordered, and everything was well under way. It was unanimously decided to go on with the treat, whatever might transpire. With this end in view the collecting books were distributed among the committee, and it was decided to vist the school on Monday morning to inform the children that the treat would be held on the 16th inst, aiad grant them a holiday for that day. It was also decided to make the charge for tea for adults Is each.

Some further minor details were arranged, and the meeting terminated., ,*
