LABOR QUESTIONS.
London, April 7. The Right Bon. A, J. Mnudella M. P. for Brigbtaide, has .ft.cc9pied:B.BPat. on the Royal Commission appointed by tbe Government to enquire into the relatione between employers and employed, the causes of labor disputes, and the best means of preventing them. Wilson, Secretary of tbe Seamen’s Union, bas been sentenced to six weeks imprisonment for inciting tbe Cardiff strikers to riot.
Brisbane, April 8. A large crowd of Unionists, estimated at nearly 1500, surrounded the railway station at Barcaldine on the arrival'of the train conveying the labor prisoners. A force of 450 troops was present to restrain the mob-from rescuing the prisoners'and the guird bad bayonets fixed, The proceedings were very riotous. April 9.
South Qaamaland carriers will not strike, and begin carting wool shortly. At a meeting of shearers at Blackall it was decided to recommend the strike committee to waive freedom of contract on condition that the pas'oralists guarantee that for..,a specified time they will not employ alien labor, reduce wages, or throw obstacles in (be way of anion organisation. Auoklahd, April 9, The members of the Boot Manufacturers Association have completed the new wages statement under which they invite the men to work. They claim that the statement gives an advance on all previous statements ; that good benchmen can get weekly wages of £2 or upwards of 10s a day on piece work, 'ihe offir of work under. this statement will be open for a yreek before other arrangements are made.
THE SITUATION IN EUROPE.
London, April 7. Reports of a disturbing nature are being received from St Petersburg and other European capitals with reference to the iEnropean situation. Berlin, April 8. Russia is massing troops on the PolishGerman frontier 1 under the pretext of carrying oot mancauvres on a large scale. ; The European,situation is regarded in Berlin as threatening, April H. The German garrisons on the Russian frontier are being strengthened. St. Petersburg, April 7. ! The Russian Press has been ordered to preserve strict silence with regard to the armaments aad movements of the troops, April 8. Ihe Czar will- visit the Emperor William of Germany in Aognst, and Russia is arranging for a loan of £20,000,000.
THE MANIPUR DISASTER
Calcutta, April 8. ; -It is now considered certain that Mr J. W. Quinton, Chief Commissioner of Assam, Mr Grimwood, British resident pi Manipur, Colonel Skene, Lieutenant Simpson, Messrs Cossina and M4vi le have been massacred, owing to the instructions issued by Mr Quinton disc osing the hosliliiy of the Marquis of Lansdowne, Viceroy of: India, towards the usurper Jobray, It is reported that Senaputty, the commander of the Manipnrs, has fled to the jungles, taking his caf lives with him.
; Russia has a high tariff. Twenty per cent im gold has been abided to the duties. The town of Metz is guarded by 20,000 mm—tha strongest garrison in the world.
