TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above board was. held on Tuesday last. Present—Messrs J. Talbot (chairman), 0. Bissett, W. Snell, and J. Woodhead. COBEESPONDENOE. Correspondence was read— From the Mount Peel Eoad Board, covering copy of' the following resolution :—“ That this board view with regret the action taken by the Geraldine County Council in proposing to close the Orari Traffic Bridge and convert it into a stock bridge; the* council surely are not aware of the immense bendfitlftf ’ this bridge to the ratepayers in this district and to the public at large; and would strongly protest on behalf of the ratepayers in this district to the bridge .being any*. thing’.else than a traffic-‘bridge; and would suggest that if made eleven feet wide it would answer all the requirements of the district; and, as the piles and other parts are reported by the surveyor of the Geraldine Eoad Board to be quite sound, and will last for 15 years, the cost of a new deck cannot be very considerable.” The letter pointed out that a petition on the subject had already been signed by 240 ratepayers, and that it would be impossible to make a river crossing by the side of the present bridge without encroaching upon private land. The board’s co-operation was requested in urging the council to adopt the resolution.—Resolved: ” That this board, while considering that the ratepayers in this district have noparticular interest, yet have sympathy with those of Mount Peel in* their efforts, and they are of opinion that all rivers on main roads should be 1 kept open.” From the Property iax Commissioner, stating that a voucher for the payment of £9B 8s 9d, for subsidy under Powers and Finance Act, had been forwarded to the Treasury for payment. Messrs Hay and Postlethwaite forwarded a lengthy opinion orr the board’s liability in connection with the erection of culverts, etc., over road; drains. The opinion was in effect that the board’s action hitherto bad been perfectly in accordance with the Acts bearing upon the subject, and that the board were not liable for accidents arising through the nonrepair of these bridge; From Mr J. M. Greenaway, asking to have E,B. 16920 transferred upon the roll to Mr F. W. Badham, and enclosing a cheque for share of rates. —The alteration to be made upon Mr Badham’s consent being obtained. From Mr Jonas Fifield, asking to be relieved of contract at Greenaway’s road, owing to the land being full of wood, etc. He asked to be paid for work done at the overseer’s valuation. —The overseer reported that he had himself been deceived as to the nature of the ground. It contained an unusual amount of wood. After some consideration the overseer was empowered to vary the contract, if satisfactory arrangements can be made in connection with same, failing which the contract to be carried out.

From Mr 5. Dalton, asking to have his name removed from the roll in respect of his leasehold. From Mr G. Ruddenklau, drawing attention to the condition of the island road, and offering to plough same at a reasonable cost, —Resolved : “ That the road in question being on private property, the original line having been washed away, the board will repair same if Mr Ruddenklau gives permission to have the same used as a public road.” From Mr A. M. Clark, applying for a crossing over the Canal drain to give access to a part of the Biverslea estate. —Granted upon the usual conditions, the applicant to keep same in repair, the board finding material. otbeseee's eepoet. The overseer made a brief verbal report. The principal work dore had been repairs to bridges, the Opihi bridge especially being particularly troublesome, HOLIDAY. An application from the overseer for a fortnight’s holiday was granted, upon the motion of Mr Bissett, seconded by Mr W. Snell. TENDERS. The following tenders were received for contract No. 85, formation of road: P. O’Mara, £22 11s 6d ; E. Counihan, £l9 ; T. Davis, £l9; W. Hopkinson, £18; J. Fifield, £l7 4s (accepted). ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £7O 6s 2d wore passed for payment. OEAEI EIYEE BOAED. Permission was granted to the Orari River Board to hold its meetings at the Road Board Office. The meeting then terminated. Stanley makes the length of the Nile 4,100 miles.
