TIMAKTT MARKETS
The Canterbury Farmers' Association, Limited, report as under : Wheat—During the past fortnight wheat has remained steady at last quotations, and all lots in shipping condition have found buyers at the following rates : Tuscan. 3s 6|d to 3s 8d; velvet and pearl, 3s 6d to 3a 7d j red chafi, 3d s&d to 3s 6|d,
with a good demand for red chaff at the above rates. Oats—Milling oats are dull of sale, and prices are about the same as last quotations, viz., Is 6£d to Is 7£d. Short feed and danish are being enquired for for the North Island, and saleable at from Is 4£d to Is s£d for short feed, and Is 3d to la 4d for danish, f.o.b. Timaru. Last year's danish fit for seed are worth about Is 4|d; tartars, Is 6d ; duns, Is sd. Barley—" Very little doing; values nominally 3s for prime malting and 2s 6d for second quality. Potatoes—Derwents are being enquired for for delivery this month at 40s f.0.b., sacks in.
ENGLISH MARKETS. London, April 1. The total quantity, of wheat and flour afloat for the TTnited Kingdom is 2,792,000 quarters, and for the Continent 1,492,000 quarters. The American visible wheat supply is estimated at 40,600,000 bushels. April 2. The wool sales opened to-day, 11,700 bales being catalogued. There was a good attendance, and competition was brisk. Prices on the whole remained unchanged, but crossbreds betrayed an upward tendency, and scoured merino a downward tendency. The wool list has closed and includes a shipment by the ship Beltana from Adelaide, New Zealand 4 per cent inscribed stock, 105*; 3i do, 99J. New Zealand long-berried wheat, 42s ; market firmer. For New Zealand wheat on passage sellers are asking 39s 6d, but buyers refuse to give more than 395. New Zealand wheat off coast, 41s. Canterbury mutton, 4|d; Wellington, 4id ; Canterbury lamb,sfd. Beef —Forequarters, 3 7-16 d; hindquarters, 4fd. Hemp is still unchanged. South Australian wheat, 43s 6d; Yictorian ditto, 42s 6d.
bugai —Beßt German beet, 13s 9d —market flat; Java, 15s 6d. No. 1 best Scotch pig iron, f.o.b. in the Clyde, 42s 6d.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, hare received the following cable message from London, dated 2ud April : Wool —The sales opened this day at the level of last series, except for fine greasy crossbred, for which the market is firmer. Faulty scoured merino, market easier. Attendance of both Home and foreign buyers is good, and competition fairly active. The total quantity available, including wool held over from last series, is 356,000 bales, 70,000 bales of which have been forwarded to the manufacturing districts direct.
