VOLUNTEER ENCAMPMENT.

Oamabu, March 30.

By Wednesday evening everything was ready for |,he men tq go straight under canvas. Every tent Had been well supplied with straw and rations for the men, and forage for the horses had been contracted for, and all got in readiness to be served out the first thing on Friday morning. The Oamaru G-arrison, consisting of the Navals, the J Battery, the Kifles, headed by the Qprriaon Band, marched out from Oamaru at about 7 30 p.m., and were the first to come into camp. .The Naseby Rifles marched from Naseby through the Pass, bringing the baggage on pack horses, and after a journey of thirtv miles en route "from .Naseby to Ngapa'ra, came down to Oamaru by train. They then marched out to the campi followed ;by t a large number of people, who were anxious to recognise their plucky march. They were under canvas by about eleven o'clock, and from this out till six o'clock in the morning contingents came marching in at all times, . The tfhristchurch, North Canterbury, Ashburton, Geraldine, and Temuka contingents travelled by speeial night train, reaching camp shortly after 6 a.m. The Timaru, Dunedin, and Invercargill Naval contingents were the next to arrive, and by noon ali the men were under canvas. The parade states, with the exception of those for North Ofcago,:were handed in early in the afternoon, when it was seen that the total number under canvas was a little short of 2000

The following are the parade states for the South Canterbury Division : Staff, Lieut.-Colonel Bailey, Major Meore, Sergt.-Major Jones, Captain Bryara, A.D.C., and Major J. A. Young; 'limaru Naval Artillery, Lieut, Gooch, 49; C Battery Artillery, Captain Jackson, 44 ; Temuka Bifles, Captain (Gutten, 35"; Ashburton Rifles, Captain Buiman. 44;. Geraldine Rifles, Captain Pearpoint, 36; Timaru Rifles, Captain Jowsey, 43 ; Waimate Rifles, Captain Capstick, 40. Total, South Canterbury division, 291. The JSorth Canterbury contingent numbered 588.

On Saturday a field-day was held, winding; up with a sham fight. Yesterday the warship Curacoa having arrived, a naval attack waß to be made on the town.

Wellington, March 28

Ihe encampment at Palmerston .North is a great success, 1200 men are under canvas on the Agricultural Show Grounds, including volunteers from Taranaki, Wanganui, Hawke's Bay, Wellington, Marlborough, and Nelson. Also four troops of cavalry are present. UPajor Pitt, of Netaon, is in command, The men were exercised yesterday in battalion drill, and the same to-day.
