THE NEWFOUNDLAND FISHERIES.
London, March 24. Sir Julius Vogel suggests that Great Britain should subsidise the Newfoundland fishermen with an amount equivalent to the bounties received by the French lobster fisheries. The Times approves of the suggestion if an amicable settlement with France fails. It is reported that if a plebiscite were taken seven-eighibs of the people of Newfoundland would vote for annexation to the United States, Ihe enforcement of the treaty with France is likely to be resisted unless a regiment of British troops is despatched to coerce the colony. St, Johns, March 25. The Government of Newfoundland are strictly enforcing the terms of the Bait Act. ■*-
