Auckland, March 23. An old man named Patrick O’Brien, sixty-four years of age, a stonebreaker at Mount Eden quarries, was found dead this morning at his work. The cause was serous apoplexy. Alfred R. Bremmer, arrested here recently on arriving by the Mariposa from Sydney on a charge of obtaining £IOO from John Barker, Victoria, by false pretences, has been remanded to Victoria. A gum dealer named Thomas Lyons, a single man, fell overboard from a yacht in the Wairoa river, and wps drowned. He bad been drinking heavily for some time, and was in a weak state. March 24.. Two boys, named O’Keefe and fljoriarty, were brought up at the Police Court to-day. O’Keefe is charged with breaking and entering stores and a house at Newmarket, and stealing goods. Moriarty is charged with being concerned in one of the offences. The Masonic Hall, Courthouse, and Warden’s office at Whangarei have been burnt down. Napiee, March 23. Hohepa Te Piri, who recently escaped from custody at Waipiro, Poverty Bay, was rearrested to-night in the bush, three miles from Waipiro, by Constable Gerrard and a party of natives. Ohbihtchukch, March 23, Mr E. Vesey Hamilton, formerly Parliamentary correspondent for the Lyttelton Times, and, successively editor of the Star and Canterbury Times, died this evening of atrophy ; aged 33, The inquest on the late Mr Gresson was held to-night. The medical evidence showed that he had been subject to attacks of vertigo lately. A verdict of accidental death was entered up. Inteecabgull, March 24, The drapery store of O. Cummins, in Mataura township, was destroyed by fire early this morning with its contents. The post-office was saved only by the strenuous exertions of a bucket brigade. The building was not insured. The stock was insured for £SOO in the New Zealand office. Mr Cummins estimates his loss at £I2OO, he having just got in a considerable quantity of new stock.
