Axtckia-nd, March 22. A man h named William Ernest Norris was Tiding a horse barebacked across the Whakatane creek during, a high flood, when both rider and horse were drowned. Gisbobnb, March 20. Hoepa iepari, who was suspected of complicity in a murder and was shadowed for a long time, was arrested yesterday at Waipara for robbery from the person with violence. Last night he escaped from the lock-upland was unsuccessfully pursued. He made ugly and threatening statements to the constable who chased him. Palmebston Nobth, March 21.
A ten-roomed house owned and occupied by Mrs Jaeobsen was burned down this morning. The occupants (six females) barely escaped with their lives. One in jumping from a window severely injured her spine. Ihe house was insured for £SOO. EiEMttNG, March 20.
A. man named Gunderson, while bush falling to-day, was struck by a dead branch of a tree. His thigh was fractured in two places, and his head was injured. He also received internal injuries and his recovery is hopeless. Hokitika, March 20. A miner named Matthew Donciati was found, dead in his claim near Goldsborough this morning. He had not been observed about since Saturday, so he had-psobably been dead some days. Death was apparently due to a fall of earth. Chbistchttbch, March 21.
A woe?. l waggon and horses belonging, to Mr Actofl Adams went over a precipice at Jollie's Pass on Friday., The four horses were killed, and the driver, a man named Newman, was bo : badly injured that hie life is despaired Db-nedih, March 20.
A five-year-old child named Allan* Arthur William Peters was drowned at Port Chalmers to-day. The child is; supposed to have fallen into the Bay l while playing. March 21.
A boating accident, by which a lad named Le Brun was drowned, occurred at Broad Bay yesterday. He was out with two other lads when the accident, of which no particulars are yet to hand, took place. The two others reached the shore, but Le Brun was drowned. He was living with his mother, a widow, in South Dunedin. John McClymont, carpenter, whilst at work at the Brooksdale Estate, Tapanui, fell down dead on Saturday, Deceased, who was 53 years of age, had been unwell for some time.
