TEMUKA AND GERALDINE A. & P. ASSOCIATION.

A general meeting of the members of the above Association was held last Saturday evening in the Star Hotel, Temuka. Mr Quinn, vice-president, took the chair, and expressed deep regret at the death of the late President of the Society, Mr R. A. Barker. A short time before Mr Barker’s death, be (Mr Quinn), had a conversation with him, with the result that they placed £6O of the money of the Society on fixed deposit in the bank. There were also a few pounds to the credit of an open account, as well as some rent which was due, but the full details could not be known until they obtained the papers which the executors of the late Mr Barker bad in their possession. He had seen Mr S. D. Barker, and he said he would give them up as soon as somebody had been properly ! authorised to take possession of them. They bad met that evening to elect officers, and appoint some one to receive the papers, but before going any further he would call on some one to move a resolution in reference to Mr Barker’s death.

Mr I'womey moved —“ That the secretary write to the relatives of the late Mr R. A. Barker, expressing the Society’s heartfelt sorrow at his untimely death.” It was not necessary for him to say much with regard to the late Mr Barker. They all knew

him, they knew that though m a state of health which rendered it undesirable to leave his house at night, Mr Barker never missed attending their meetings. The Society was not a great success,

but it was not Mr Barker’s fault. He always did bis best, and if others worked like him they would be in a different position. His death was a great loss to the district, he was a thoroughly conscientious public man, and it was not too much to say that they would not very often meet with the likes of him again. Mr S. Cain seconded the motion, and it was carried unanimously. The election of officers resulted as follows President and Treasurer, Mr M. Quinn; Vice-Presidents, Messrs P. Wareing and J. Talbot; (Secretary, Mr W. Wills ; Committee, Messrs Hayhurst, J, Grant, J. Meyer, W. Ackroyd, W. Wright, W. DeEenzie, B. Lee, J. Austin, J. M. Twomey, J. Guild, and S. Cain. A letter was received from the lessee of the Society’s ground, asking the meeting to vary the terms of his lease, so that he might be able to put in a root crop, and also to extend his lease for one year longer. On the motion of Mr Wareing the matter was postponed for one month. On the motion of Mr Wareing Mr Quinn was authorised to obtain all papers belonging to the Society from the executors of the late Mr It. A. Barker, The meeting then terminated.
