LABOR QUESTIONS.
London, February 24. ! The Orient Company are overcoming the difficulty of manning the Austral. Upwards of 3000 stevedores are on Strike. ! The Shipping Federation is able to Supply 2000 firemen, and is providing sleeping accomodation for their men at the docks, ! Mr W. H. Smith states that a Labor Commission will enquire into the cause of the labor dispute, and whether legislation on the subject is possibK Co-operative contracts are working virell at the Albert Locks. February 25, The Labor Unions allege that the Shipping Federation, fearing a general strike, are not now misting on the employment of free labor, although upwards of 1000 non-Unionists are working at the Ijopdop dflcks on the shipping federation ticket.
The Shipping Federation is doubtful whether the stevedores will obey orders.
The merchants fear the result of the threatened strike. Little metal, produce or meat has been unloaded for the past fortnight owing to the prevalence of fog, and supplies are running short.
The number of free- laborers available is increasing.
The Standard says that' the Strikes Commission will consist of the Prince of Wales, Sir John Gorst, Sir Reginald Welby, and Lord Randolph /Ghnrchill, Ihe last named will probably act as chairman. The stevedores have withdrawn their manifesto under pressure of the Dockers Union. The London Chamber of Commerce has invited the Shipping Federation and the various labour unions to bold a friendly conference. The Times ie of opinion that the Commission to be set up by the Government' should enquire to what extent unions have a right to interfere with hours of labor ; also to report as to the best method of averting strikes. One thousand free labourers have offered their services. The offices are opening a register for non-; union dockers. It is proposed that if the block coo-, tinues in London to employ laborers onlyi and lock ont the non-unionists. ; Half of the first penny levy on the tonnage belonging to the Shipping-Federa-tion is still unspent. Work is at present proceeding quietly, Brisbane, February 25. | Government have 300 men underl arms in the disturbed districts, and the | Unionist force is estimated at 600. i
