CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington yards on Wednesday all lines of sheep were competed for keenly and sold at satisfactory'prices. In some ■ cases the top pride of the season was reached. Tat Sheep—ln fat sheep 2500 were yarded Competition was very keen, and a rise of Lp on last week’s prices prices took place. Fat crossbred wethers sold .at 37s 3d, merino do at;i ewes about 14s. There were for, Mr A. M. Clark, crossbred wethers.:at 16s lOd, and 70 crossbred ewes at 13s 9d to Iss. • Fat’. .Lambs —ln fat lambs the supply was not so large as last week, but the quality was remarkably good, and.'one pen of very fine lambs that would weigh close pn 601 b brought the of the Bdason, 16s 6d, ; On the whold prices were dearer .than last week,, >, About 1200 were yarded and all ;Sold freely, prices ranging from about 8s to 16s. 6d. Store Sheep—About 3000 store sheep were yarded,, principally old ewes aRd lambs. All lots sold freely at Is better than last week. Crossbred ewes, failing" mouths sold at 5s to Bs, sound-mouthed do 9s to 10s 6d, crosslambs 4s 6d to 3s 7d, forward condition merino wethers 6s Id, crossbreds Os to 10s 3d, in small lots„
Fat Cattle—24o head of fairly good cattle were yarded, but the sale was dull and dragging and prices uneven, t-otne beef sold as low as 12s, but best quality realised about 18s per 1001 b. Steers sold as high as £7 sa; cows and heifers £3 10a to £6 10s. On the whole there was a considerable falli in last week’s prices. Store Cattle—There was a larger entry than usual of store cattle and dairy cows, hut the bidding was very dull.
. Pigs—The > entry was the largest seen in the yards for a long time, all sorts and sizes being present, The bulk of the entry was small stores. Prices were the same as last week except for light baconers, the prices for which fell slightly. CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE, Ihe following is the Corn Exchange report (per N. P. Meyers, Secretary), for the week ending Friday, February 27th:— The rains during the past week have' done some damage to the unharvested grain, of which there is a good quantity near the bills, however, the rain has ; done an infinite amount of good to the grass and turnips, which will counterbalance the injury done to the grain crops. The; samples on offer have, been in good condition, but the majority are on the thin side. Wheat has hardened slightly and our last week’s quotations are easily obtainable. The absence of freight in Port makes the buyers more independent than they otherwise would be. Pasture seeds are in firm request, but, dairy produce is hardly so firm. Quotations are as follow: . Wheat —Prime milling tuscan,3s4d to. 8s sd; pearl, 3s 3d to 3s 4d; hunters, 3s Id to 3s 2d; whole chick, 3a: broken; 2s 6d to 2s 9d. Oats—milling, Is 8d; short feed, Is 6d to Is 7d; long and inferior, Is 4d to Is sd.
Barley—Prime malting, 3s 3d; medium, 2s 9d to 3s; feed sorts,' 2s 6d.
Peas—Prussiablues, true to name, 3s 3d; feed sorts, 2s 6d. Grass- Seed Machine-dressed, 5s 3d. Farmers’ lines vary from 3s 6d to 4s 6d, according to quality. Cocksfoot Machinerdressed, 5d > growers’ samples, 3|d to 4£d. Dairy Produce Factory-make butter, 7d to 8d; farmers’ keg, 6£d to I 7d. Loaf-shape cheese, 4£d; medium and larger sizes, 3f d to 4d. The above prices are those paid toi farmers for delivery, f.0.h., Lyttelton, sacks extra.
ASHBURTON LIVE STOCK MARKET. The recent rains, with the consequent rapid growth of the pastures, had a healthy effect on the sale of sheep at the Ashburton yards on Tuesday. About 6000 were penned, and there was a large attendance of buyers. A good line of fourrooth crossbred 'freezers brought'lAs 4d. Fat sheep sold from 8s 81 to 9s; merino ewes, 6s lid to 7s 5d ; two-tooth crossbreds, 8s ; l.mbs, 6s Id, 7s 91 and 8s to 8j 8d A particularly good line of lambs, ready for the freezing works, brought 12s 6d. A line of broken-mouthed crossbred ewes sold at 8s 41. About 20 head of cattle were yarded, and sold at from £3 2s to £5 10s for fat and £1 8a to £llßa for stores.
DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday:— Wheat—Milling wheat remains at last' week’s quotations; all prime samples find buyers at, for good tuscan and , velvet, 3s lid to 4s; medium: quotations, 3s 8d to 3s lOd. Fowls’ wheat continues scarce —good whole is saleable at 8s 6d to 3s 7d ; medium and broken, 3s 6d to 3s 4d, Barley—Very little malting barley offering as yet —worth 3s to 3s 3d; milling and feed.sorts, 2s 2d to 2s 6d. Oats—Easier, good milling, Is 5d to Is s|d ; bright short feed, ls4|d to Is sd; medium quality, Is 3|d to Is 4d. Flour—Tirnam roller in sacks, £10; in 50’s, £lO 15s here; Southern stone brands in sacks, £9 ss; in 50’s, £9lss here. Oatmeal, in 25’s, £9; 7’s, £11; in bulk (200’s), £8 10s. Bran, 60s. sharps, 70s. Potatoes —Good kidneys, 60s; small and inferior, 45s to 50s, Pigs —Better demand, 3d for good quality; hams, 7d to 8d; bacon, 5d to 6d. Chaff—Good oaten sheaf, 42s 6d to 45S'j medium qualify, 36s to 40s. Straw, oaten and wheaten, 30a. Butter —Fresh, supply about equal to demand, 6d; salt, 6d, (packages extra). Eggs—Plentiful and prices much lower.
Honey—Prime extracted, 5d ; other qualities, 4d to 4|d, Cheese—Factory, large sizes, 4d to 4£d ; loaf sizes, sizes, to 3|d ; loaf sizes, 4d. Grass Seeds Ryegrass in good demand; prime machine dressed, 4s 9d to 5s 3d ; farmers’ lots, good quality, 3a 9d to 4s fid ; inferior, 3s 3d to 3a 6d. Cocksfoot—Very little as yet doing in new seed ; 4d to sd.
Sheepskins—On Tuesday country dry skins had good attention, and realised very satisfactory prices. Of these crossbreds, low to medium, brought Is 9d to 3s 9d ; do do merinos, Is 8d to 3s 7d ; full-woolled crossbreds, 4s 9d to 6s 6d ; do do merino, 4s 2d to 5s 9d ; dry pelts, Id to Is 6d ; green crossbred pelts for special purposes, 2s Sd to 2s 2d ; good to medium, 2s Id to Is 7d; inferior, Is 6d to Is 3d; green lambskins, 2s 6d to Is each,
Hides —A moderately good demand exists. For heavy weights, free from and offal, 601 b and over, 2fd; medium, 2d'to 2-£d; light, to Ifd ; inferior and slippy, Id to lid per lb. Tallow Prime rendered mutton, 19s to 20s ; medium to good 16s to 17s; inferior and mixed, 12s to 15s 6d; rough fat best, 13s to 13s 6d:;, inferior to medium and good, 9s to 12s 6d per cwt, DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS. At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday the following business was transacted : Fat Cattle—Only 89 yarded, hut the demand was sluggish all through. Beat bullocks brought £6 10s to £7 10s; medium to good, £5 to £6 ss; light, £3 to £4los; best cows, £4 15s to £6 2s 6d ; light and medium to fair quality,. £2 5s to £4 IQs. Fat Sheep-1528 yarded. The sales opened fairly,brisk ,c at about equal to last week’s, but as they progressed the demand slacked off : considerably, and towards the close prices obtaining were lower by Is per head. Best crossbred /wethers brought 12s 9d to 14s 6d; medium, 10a> to' 'l2s Odyhest ; db ewes, 12s 3d to 13s; medium, 9s to 11s 6d; merino wethers, 9s to 12s lOd, | . Fat Lambs—737 penned. Thjedemand was: hardly so brisk as last week. Best brought 9a to lls 3d ; inferior to medium, 5s 9d to 8s 9d. !
Pigs—Only 76 were penned. Suckers brought 7s 6d to lls ; slips, 14s; stores, 16a to 20a; porkers, 22a to 275; baconers, 30s to 355. Therp were aold for Mr W. Q-rant (Timaru), 4 pigs at 85a, 4 at 33a, 4at Sis, 2 at 30s, 2 at 295. i
AUSTRALIAN MARKETS.
Sydney, February 25. ! Wheat, chick; 2a 6d to 2s lOd; milling, 3a 9d. Oats, Is lid. Maize, new crop, 2s 6d to 2s 9d ; old, Bs to 3s '2d.' Barley, Cape, 2s; English feeding sorts, 3s. Bran, 7d, Pollard; Bd. - Peas, Prussian blue, 3s lOd, Potatoes, £3 10s. Onions, £3 10s. Butter, dairy made, sd; cream separator, 6d; factory made, 7d. The market is glutted. Cheese, loaf, sd. Bacon, machine made, to 6d; hand; made, 6|d to 8d ; New;; Zealand, 8d to 9d. Hams, New Zealand,' lid to Is. Bidding, at the wool sales is well sustained, the ' derriand for 'scoured being , somewhat stronger. Greasy commands up to B£d, medium washed llfd, good scoured combing 14fd. Melbourne, February 25. Wheat, prime sorts, 3s 6d to 3s Flour, stone made, £7 5s to £7 15s; ro'llfer made; £8 to £8 15s. Oats, Algerian, la to Is 9d; Danish, stout, 2s 10d,; ! New Zealand, in bond, 2s. Maize, 3s Id, Barley, medium 2s lOd to 2s lid. Bran, 9d. Peas, 2s 2d. Queensland sugar, best whites, £22 15s to £23 ss. Holders'exhibit considerable firmness and whole Mauritius consignments have been passed in. Adelaide. February 25. Wheat is firm at 3s B£d. Flour, stone made, £7 10s to £8; roller made, £8 5s to £9. Oats, New Zealand, 3s Id to 3s 2d. Barley, 8s to 3s 4d.
: ENGLISH MARKETS. London, February 24. Wool is unchanged, February 25. Ox hides, 3£d to 3|d per lb. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cable message from London, dated 24th inst.:Wheat market is firm. New Zealand average is worth 38s per 4961 b; New Zealand wheat, long-berried, is worth 39s 9d per 4961 b; New Zealand wheat, f.a.q., to arrive, iron ship, is worth, c.i.f., 37s per 4801 b, FebruaryMarch hill of lading.
