Gisbobhe, Feb. 25. John Bryant Lane, convicted on a charge of arson, was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment. New Plymouth, Feb. 26. A man named Salisbury set fire to the bathing-house in the Recreation Ground at 2 o’clock this morning, and tnen came to town and rang the firebell. The alarm caused considerable excitement. Salisbury gave himself up to the police. It is thought he is not right in his mind. Nblsoh, Feb. 26. Yesterday afternoon Robert Henry McCoombes, working at Wairoa Gorge, was pushing a piece of rock off a line of road when he fell with it over a precipice about one hundred feet, and his son, who was with him, and others found him dying when they reached him, Wbstpobt, Feb. 26. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day two firemen of the s.s. laieri, named Connelly and Kirke, were charged by Captain Richardson with assaulting a fireman named James Morris. Kirke and Connelly went oh board the ■ vessel early this morning, dragged Morris out of his bunk, and kicked him about the head and face. Morris had a loaded pistol in his bunk, and said that he carried it because he had been beaten once before and continually threatened. Captain Richardson deposed that Morris was an unusually quiet man. The defence was that Morris threatened to shoot Kirke. Prisoners were convicted— Connelly got fourteen days and Kirke one month. Morris said that he was compelled to join the union on account of the persecution he suffered. Cheistchubch, Feb. 24. Constable Lewis, stationed at Rakaia, reported to Inspector Pender on Monday that two men named Sheppard and Smith bad been “ skylarking ’’ about the forecarriage of a travelling hut in which they were living, when both men fell over on to the ground, and Sheppard was badly hurt. Dr Tweed was sent for, and found that Sheppard had sustained serious internal injuries and partial paralysis. As fatal results were feared the man’s depositions were taken. [Later news states that Shephard, who was injured by a fellow farm servant jumping on his back in a lark, died on Wednesday afternoon ]
