ENGLAND AND THE COLONIES.
London, Feb, 18. Replying to Mr Howard Vincent's motion in the Bonso of Commons, with reference to a Colonial Conference, Mr Goschen said that Greit Britain might pay something to continue the union of the British Empire but not to increase the cost of food, There could bj no objection to the principle of a Customs union, though there was the difficulty that the country would not tolerate differential duties. It would be essential however, that the colonies should put 5 per cent, extra on foreigners, ani pass a tariff likely to protect Great Britain from loss, The imounts contributed by the colonies towards the naval defence were extremely insignificant, snd he would be glad to see the cost of Imperial defence spread over a wide area. At the close of the debate the previous question wad adopted.
